When we first got there I noticed all of the Men were dressed in suits which made me slight underdressed, but I felt little to no anxiety about it once I was there. Once inside, we were greeted by a few other church members and were directed to an area to sit. There was no gospel or music playing which was different than my experience in my own church settings. I was advised to download the Jehovah Witness Library app in order to follow along during the service. Prior to the service beginning I surveyed the room and saw that no one was thinking about me and my fears of sticking out were debunked. The focus of my work in Student Affairs to date has primary revolved around creating a better understanding of people of color in our society. The same work that drives me I was not carrying over some of those same empathetic principles when dealing with Jehovah Witnesses. There is a common thread among different groups of people, that there is a desire to be understood and respected. The church service I was able to witness allowed me to see that Jehovah witness’s beliefs and place of worship has some strong similarities. As it relates to religion I think it is imperative as human beings and student affairs professionals to be open and understanding. Even if you don’t understand or agree with a religion or practice still be respectful and understanding so that you can best serve a
