Due to his childhood, Jeffrey Dahmer had a fear of abandonment. This was one of the main reasons he committed the murders. A few times, Dahmer murdered because he was afraid that the victim was going to leave, and once he started to eat his victims it was because he claimed it would be better to have them died then to let them leave. He admitted to eating a victim bicep, stating that “it was big and wanted to try it.” He later confessed that cannibalism made him feel like his victims were a permanent part of him. He also enjoyed dismembering the bodies and taking photos of them, arranging them in certain ways. Other behaviors included leaving naked bodies around his apartment so he could sodomize them and showering with dead victims. He depended on the dead bodies for companionship. Necrophilia is when an engages in sexual activity with the deceased. People who suffer from Asperger’s Disorder usually do not form close relationships with others and avoid contact with others. Siwa et al. believes that Dahmer’s obsession with dead bodies allowed him to rethink them as love or sex object devoid of independent thought and emotion, and hence he developed his disorders, such as Aspergers. Jeffrey’s father claims that as a young child he did not hold eye contact and held his body stiffly, which again implies Asperger’s disorder. Jeffrey Dahmer is quoted saying that, “The subtleties of social life were beyond my grasp. When children liked me, I did not know why. Nor could I formulate a plan for winning their affection. I simply didn't know how things worked with other people….and try as I might, I could make other people seem less strange and

An accused may be able to reduce the liability of their criminal act through proving that they were mentally unstable at the time of the offence, and this challenges rationality since perhaps the mind was “involuntarily incurred” (Mitchell, 1986, 273). There was dispute regarding whether the verdict in Dahmer’s case was just, due to his child-rearing stages consisting of barbaric acts such as disembowelling a found dead dog (Purcell and Arrigo, 2006). During the case, the defendant’s psychiatrists claimed that he was incapable of monitoring his actions (Reznek, 1997). This issued a dilemma within the court case, since it was unclear if Dahmer was simply wicked, or should be excused due to a mental disorder (Reznek, 1997). Despite the guilty verdict issued by the jury, the classical perspective fails to clarify whether Dahmer chose to develop these urges as a child, which had ultimately led him to commit such violent…

“The jury chose to believe the prosecutors assertion that Dahmer was fully aware that his acts were evil, but that he chose to commit them anyway.” While the defense was trying to prove Dahmer’s insanity, the jury did not, and found him sane and guilty (“Jeffrey Dahmer Biography” 5). He was found guilty for fifteen murders and was sentenced to nine hundred fifty-seven years in prison (Crime Museum 2). He served his sentence at Columbia Correctional Institute in Wisconsin (Time Warner Books 243).
