Society Makes People Good Or Evil

Improved Essays
We have all heard people refer to others as good or evil. Religion teaches this to us. Historically through the possessions of evil spirits or the devil has taken someones soul. Is this real, or is it an over simple explanation on why humans do bad things. I believe there is no such thing as good or evil. Humans are complex and simply using the religious derived definition of evil discounts, how complex humans are and removes the responsibility we have of our own actions as well as our social responsibility.

It's a dangerous over-simplification to believe that some are innately ‘good’ while others are innately ‘evil’ or ‘bad.’ This is a misleading concept, ‘bad’ people commit crimes, and we should throw them away because there is no hope. We cage them and forget about them. This concept has also fuelled many wars and conflicts in history, and even in the present day. It makes people or groups they are affiliated with believe that they are fighting a just cause against an ‘evil’ and that once the ‘evil’ people have been killed they will be right and everything will be peaceful. It removes our social responsibility and individual accountability. It is easier to say Jeffrey Dahmer was born evil than ask the question of what did society due to help him. What processes and services were in place to help the abused and mentally ill. I am a good person, but not by chance or birthright. I have been raised my amazing parents that have taught be to be kind and compassionate to others. They have showed me love and protected me from the bad in the world. I have also taken personal responsibility of my actions to ensure I treat people the way in which I want to be treated. I am thankful for my environment, it is safe. It would be easy for people to refer to me as innately good, I question if that would be different if I was subjected to the environment of Dahmer and

People are not born evil, they learn bad things from the world. Zimbardo defines “evil” as the exercises of power to intentionally harm (psychologically), hurt (physically), and / or destroy mortally and commit crimes against humanity. People do have the capacity for evil but that does not make everyone a potential monster. Sharon Begley says that when people look at Timothy McVeigh they do not see a monster but they see a human. McVeigh had done a lot of bad things but at the end of the day we see him as nothing more than a human.…

Evil Around Every Corner Humans have always been capable of doing evil things. It is almost instinct even if we know it is bad. 1 My favorite character in Dorothy Must Die would probably be Nox. Nox was one of those characters that you really didn’t learn much about until the end of the story. I think that’s why he seemed so appealing to me whilst reading. He would go from being nice to having a hard backbone in this story. Also, the fact that he had a different form of magic than everyone else set him apart, which is one of the reasons that he stood out rather than the rest of the witches.…

The Human Race and Essentialism: An Illusion When people are born, they are not essentially good or evil at heart. People come into the world as objective creatures, and their environment influences what kind of person they grow up to be. People can be compared to a lightly painted canvas, and the environment is the brush that adds color- the good and the bad. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the idea of being good or evil at heart can be observed though the characters such as Scout Finch and Bob Ewell.…

Since the beginning of time, many evil things have occurred on this earth; however, many good things have also happened. Does the good done outweigh the evil? It is hard to say. There have been a lot of extreme evils in our past, such as: slavery, the holocaust, and the Catholic Church is not void of evil, as is the case of The Crusades. The list is incessant.…

To think of humans as good to begin with and not evil would be to suggest that God in his creation of humanity never made a mistake in the making but the problem of evil came from us. To take what happened to Adam and Eve and that apple of knowledge of good and evil and expose ourselves into a savage world and make those judgements and choices ourselves and pay for it however we deserve it. Who are we to assume that God in his all powerful notions ever created something in which he would not have complete control…

It seems that it is the mind and intelligence, the ability of a human to learn to be proper, that separates Humanity from the Animal Kingdom. It is interesting to think that humans wish that they were inherently good, which is why when most would answer the question if they believe they are good or evil inherently, they would likely suggest that they are good. however, it does not seem to be a bad thing to be inherently evil. It seems to be that of something that is righteous that Society has been able to overcome the barbaric…

A popular argument between people is: Are people good or evil? This is very difficult to answer because it is hard to define what is good and what is evil. Our population is 7 billion, 420 million and most people should be hard pressed to think that over 3.5 billion people in this world are evil. In sophomore level english II, students read Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Lord of the Flies by William Golding. They also examine the articles “The Psychology of Evil” By Philip Zimbardo, “What Makes Good People Do Bad Things?”…

Unlike all those Marvel stories, nobody is pure“evil” or “ good” in the real world. All the people in the world have done something evil or something good at least once. The one who judges people by a simple “good” or “evil” is the one who has never tried to walk in someone else's shoes. If you don’t understand why I think of that, here is an example.…

Humans are all born as good but what make a person good or bad are the choices he or she makes in life. When a baby is born he is not born with the intent to do evil. The baby is born with the intent to learn and gain knowledge to make the decision of their role in life. It is in the early stages of life when a person finds themselves. A person is born with a clean slate then the person they will become is determined but, not written in stone.…

My thoughts on human nature can best be summed up by the character Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that’s who we really are.” Our ability to critically think about our behavior and make choices is what makes us human and sets us apart from our hominid ancestors. In fact, as far as other species are concerned, there is no concept of “good” and “evil”; there is predator and prey, threatening and safe, dominant and submissive. Morality is not a factor at play in the animal kingdom.…

Each individual has a different understanding of what the word “bad” or “evil” mean. If one person believes that stealing is bad, another person might believe that stealing is a good thing if it serves the greater good, for example, Robin Hood. The words “bad” and “good” are subjective and can vary in people’s views. Yet, by looking at the world today, it is difficult to say that humans are naturally good. However, when a child is brought into this world, one tends to associate them with purity and innocence.…
