It was common knowledge that Jeffrey was the product of a complicated pregnancy, as his mother was known to suffer from disabling nausea, anxiety and dysphoria, along with the frequent use of prescribed tranquilizers (Ferrari et al., 2002). As a youth, Dahmer displayed serious anti-social behaviour that deterred him from developing friendships with his peers. While his peers filled their time watching recently released movies and listening to the latest songs, Dahmer was busy collecting road kill, stripping animal carcasses and saving the animals’ bones (Ferrari et al., 2002). In addition to these disturbingly violent behaviours, Dahmer was seen developing issues with compulsive masturbation in his earlier years (Ferrari et al., 2002). As an adult, Jeffrey had exposed himself in a sexual manner towards both adults and minors, as well as reportedly masturbating in public; these behaviours ultimately led him to his first experiences of legal difficulties and pathed the way for future disturbing behaviours (Ferrari et al., …show more content…
He began experimenting with chemical based techniques of disposal, as well as consuming the flesh of his victims (Ferrari et al., 2002). It became evident that he took a fancy to African-American males, meeting them at gay bars or the mall, Dahmer would entice them with either alcohol or the promise of money if they agreed to pose for photographs (Montaldo, 2016). Once he had his victim alone, Dahmer would drug them, occasionally torture them, and strangle them to death (Montaldo, 2016). He would then masturbate over their corpse and/or perform his necrophilia fantasies, followed by the dismemberment of the body and the disposal of the remains (Montaldo, 2016). It was often seen that Dahmer would keep parts of the body, such as the skull or other bones, much like he did with the road kill collection in his earlier years, as well as refrigerate their organs which he would occasionally consume (Montaldo,

He states that serial killers are “frequently the products of broken or severely brutal homes, where they have themselves been subjected to gross cruelty, sexual abuse, and in some cases prolonged and systematic torture, in deprived childhood: negative parenting as the jargon has it. Vulgatim: the brutal father is the father to the brutal father.” (Egan 327). Serial killers bare painful memories from their childhood, of abuse, humiliation, frustration, or being bullied, they use fantasies to escape, comfort themselves, and even develop an alternate identity that feels more powerful or provides greater ego status.…

An accused may be able to reduce the liability of their criminal act through proving that they were mentally unstable at the time of the offence, and this challenges rationality since perhaps the mind was “involuntarily incurred” (Mitchell, 1986, 273). There was dispute regarding whether the verdict in Dahmer’s case was just, due to his child-rearing stages consisting of barbaric acts such as disembowelling a found dead dog (Purcell and Arrigo, 2006). During the case, the defendant’s psychiatrists claimed that he was incapable of monitoring his actions (Reznek, 1997). This issued a dilemma within the court case, since it was unclear if Dahmer was simply wicked, or should be excused due to a mental disorder (Reznek, 1997). Despite the guilty verdict issued by the jury, the classical perspective fails to clarify whether Dahmer chose to develop these urges as a child, which had ultimately led him to commit such violent…

Strain theory illustrates that Dahmer’s crimes could have come about because of a supposed consistency between materialistic goals and values he had with what was available to him by society, family or anything else that got in his way of accomplishing his deeds. The general theories of crime say that offenders are not disciplined and that their ties to social order are fragile and have a deficiency of self-control. Some individuals have urges that they feel they do not have control over and what makes them do certain kinds of crimes. Dahmer was like this.…
