Jeffrey Brown Ted Talk

In Jeffrey Brown’s TED talk “How we cut youth violence in Boston by 79 percent", he told us about the process of reducing the rate of youth crime, drug and violence in his neighborhood. Jeffrey Brown is a Baptist minister. Instead of preaching decrying crime, he decided to communicate with young people in his community. He discovered another positive sides of their characteristic which other people can't see. Thus, he played a significant role in collaborating with faith group, government and police to bring a brighter future for youth in Boston. From his story, I get a certain message that community and environment can directly affect young people's behavior. Let’s talk about our Sac City College. The answer is Yes. When school actively develops community resources, it is able to promote student learning, motivation and their staying in school. School systems should build learning communities, within classrooms and school wide. First of all, there is a community of learners in every classrooms where professors directly play main roles to assist student’s general academic process. Professors is not only the imparter of knowledge, but also student's motivation and engagement. By active teaching strategies, they could help student behaviorally and cognitively involved in learning process. ESL professors, for instance, who have to use different planning, strategies and assessment skills to help non-native speaker students to enhance English skills.
