Jeffrey Bennett Community Service Essay

One must evaluate the characteristics that guide to prosperous tools of community service demands in high school. Jeffrey Bennett from the University of Arizona administered a study on inner-city high schools that had the graduation requirement, to decide whether or not it successfully promoted public engagement. After research he discovered that a student’s mindset on community service and public engagement was built on the composition of the program. Advisors, good community relationships and multiple service opportunities would greatly influence the views of high school students. Bennett explains that although that additional support would have been helpful, it would have also been limiting. Community service and service-learning are not …show more content…
It doesn't make the students that do the service any more capable of success than the others who haven't done the service. Yes, it is good to take an extra mile, but it is up to each pupil on whether or not they will take it. If they don’t take it then that student should still have the ability to graduate ( on time), as long as he or she has met all other requirements. It should be what the students do academically inside the classrooms that matter, not what goes on outside of the schol. In a way it seems that administrators of high schools are only trying to make things a little more difficult, so student have trouble getting out. The students are to be told what to do inside the classroom and inside the school to follow rules. The people who run the high schools are not to be parents or bosses. They are there to educate and encourage them. They can only motivate each student to get involved with their community and to strive, but not to force them to work with their community. If they haven’t done the service themselves, they don’t really have the authority to pressure the students to do so. That’s like the pot calling the kettle black. Instead of forcing more work on student before graduation, administrators need to focus on making the students last year an unforgettable

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

Open and willing to listen to others and show a genuine care and concern is a rare find in high school today. It was enlightening to learn of Robert’s trip to Haiti where he has gained a broader outlook on the world and life. Robert also has an appreciation for all he possesses and determination to someday make a difference in the world. It is because of experiences such as the trip to Haiti and membership in Common Ground that have inspired Robert to go beyond the required. I admire not only the myriad of activities he is involved, but more the consistency and leadership positions he maintains.…

Schools definitely should encourage appropriate behavior by reinforcing good morals, values and respect for authority, but the responsibility of instilling those values in the minds of students lies with the parents. If these values are not initially taught in the home, school officials can rarely succeed in convincing a child of their worth. Most children behave the way they see their parents behave. If their parents treat others with respect and kindness, the students will likely do the same.…

Community service has always been a priority in my life, with this scholarship I will have more time and freedom to pursue my philanthropic goals. As a Diversity Scholar I currently volunteer 10- 12 hours a year for the Department of Community Engagement and Multicultural center on campus. Yet, due to my demanding work schedule I am unable to participate in many other community service projects. However, if selected for the Shawn Carter foundation scholarship I plan to meet the 25hr/ of community service requirement by joining the Diversity Outreach Team, Volunteering at the Campus food pantry, and Participating in Alternative Spring break. People are instructed from a young age to hold regard for those individuals whom live selflessly to bring about a sense of progress towards the greater good of the society that they inhabit. Aside from being told to show respect for these virtuous individuals, people are then told to partake in the same acts so that they too may hold the honor of virtue as well as be a benefit to society. However, this instruction to be unselfish ironically entails rather selfish undertones thus implying that acts of being selfless and those of selfishness both have similar meanings behind them, and thus the line that separates them is blurred. It is Friedrich Nietzsche who uses this argument in critiquing unselfishness within his book, Beyond Good and Evil.…

I think that seven hours is too little to expect of a high school student because there are at least 44 days in a quarter and seven hours of service can be done in about two to three days. When some students hear that you only have to complete seven hours of service per quarter, they get happy because they know it wont be a lot of work, so at times people join just because of that reason. I think that at least 12 to 16 hours of service should be completed per…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…
