The Toronto Charter for a Healthy Canada (2002), identifies that social determinants of health such as education, employment and job connections, health care services, housing, level of income and social exclusion are directly affected by physical, social and economic environments. African Americans and immigrants are vulnerable to the health-threatening effects of these deforming conditions (Toronto Charter for a Healthy Canada, 2002). This demonstrates the importance and the relevance as to why the students at C.W. Jeffery’s might be experiencing these mental health issues that are not school-related. Research shows that youths living in low income neighbourhoods are at a relatively high risk of being exposed to violence, which in turn affects their mental health. Its shown to cause post-traumatic stress, failure in school, depression and engaging in risky sexual behaviour (Spano, Rivera & Bolland, 2006). Children exposed to violence are more likely to engage in violent behaviour and if exposed to it for a long period of time, they lose the sensitivity of it happening in their environment and increases the likely hood of other violent behaviour (Spano, Rivera & Bolland, 2006).
