According to the Amerian Psychological Association, suicide is the third leading cause of death for people ages 15-24 (American Psychological Association). In recent years, the topic of teenage suicide has been highly publicized in the media. One of the reasons often associated with today’s youth choosing to make this tragic decision is bullying. Randall Mann’s “September Elegies” is a piece that serves as an elegy dedicated to four gay teenage boys who made the decision to take their own lives in September 2010.…
The way he elaborated his personal experiences was quite persuasive and realistic such that anyone could distinctly understand what he was describing much like they had themselves experienced that situation. The depth of detail he uses…
By using common sense and beliefs, his message was effective. In paragraph 26, he says “Every minute one of them dies of disease, violence, famine. Some of them-- so many of them-- could be saved”. He believes that if people did their part and chose to help, children could have had another chance at life. Another use of logos was in the fifth paragraph of his speech which states that the failures of society results in a “dark shadow over humanity”.…

He wrote about the many problems in education. But one thing he did not do was provide any solutions. The first part of finding the solution is pointing out the problem. His made me reminisce about all the times that school made me get frustrated. He really appealed to me because I understand completing what he is stating in his writing.…

Counseling adolescents is very different then counseling adults and I would have liked to learn more on how to help them through the crisis of suicide. We all know that cyberbullying is a major factor to teenage and adolescent suicide due to all of the social media outlets. Dr. Wright (2011) did discuss with his readers on how to help individuals thinking of committing suicide. However, I wish that he would have touched on how to handle suicide and suicidal ideations when dealing with…
We are the ones that are unnoticed and shamed for existing under the control of the ‘non-existent’ disease of mental disorders. A disease which effects one in seven Australians in their lifetime , though education systems continue to refute the significance of expressing mental illness. I was criticised in school for exploring the subject matter or mental illness and domestic violence in my artwork, where I was told that it is too “controversial” and “confronting” for people. My artwork comprised of an expressionistic self-portrait with a monochromatic colour scheme, engaging the audience through raising awareness on the stigma surrounding mental illness that it rarely addressed on a public scale.…
Mental illnesses have been around during Egyptian and Mesopotamian ages. And throughout the years many things have changed. Many right movements for the mentally ill have been made, along with many different Act’s have been ruled, and a large hand full of associations have been made to support psychiatric patients. Many people have changed their opinions on the mentally ill because they’ve finally opened their eyes to what people have to suffer through. People have been trying to treat mental illnesses since 5000 BCE.…
Mental Illness in America living with the Misconception: The misconception of mental illness in America is often ignored; many people dismiss the issue of mental health conditions, meanwhile others are aware of the conditions yet do nothing to raise awareness. When mental conditions are being acknowledged, the diseases are often mocked for entertainment purposes, misrepresented online and on television. There are many misconceptions surrounding mental illnesses and these misconceptions are caused from social media, social stigma, and the lack of awareness. Leading to even more suffering from those individuals who already have enough to deal with.…
Spoken word poetry is a form of poetry that the author gives life to through voice inflections and word play. In Shane Koyczan’s spoken word piece “To This Day”, Shane uses vivid mental imagery and particular emphasis to bring attention to bullying and mental illnesses. Through the telling of people's struggles he teaches he readers that it is possible to survive mental illnesses no matter the stigma put on you because of them, and that we all need to work together to spread the word and help the victims. For most people, working with loud noises is the best way to get attention, but for Shane, working with both noise and silence is more impactful.…

Many people believe that mentally ill is something you became rather than something you are from the beginning; the idea that children may suffer from a mental illness must mean that something terrible has happened to speed a younger person toward this because it could not have been there all along. But if we recognize that mental illness is something that can affect a person at any age, even without any distinguishable trauma or environmental trigger, might we be able steer a child toward health just as piano lessons can steer a child toward skill? In exploring this idea and some of the challenges facing child mental health, I spoke with Carnation Elementary School counselor, Leanna Koenigs I asked Ms. Koenigs what her expectations were going into mental health.…
Suicide is a really serious problem that impacts everyone, even the youth. “Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people between the ages of ten and twenty four “(Ashford). It results in approximately four thousand six hundred deaths each year, but even though mental health administrators suggested widespread screening for suicides and mental illness for students in 2003 (Freidman), “only less than two percent of schools have a mental health screening program” (Briggs). All schools should offer mental health screenings for its students as it can help professionals and parents in the early identification of teens at risk for depression and suicidal impulses because unless there is more awareness and prevention, suicide will carry on to take the lives of the young. All schools are in a significant position to…
