Born in 1955 in Pennsylvania, Jeff Koons is a renowned American contemporary artist known for his practice of placing every day, ordinary objects in unique installations. Although he got his expertise in Baltimore at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he obtained his M.F.A., he ended up transferring to the School of the Art Institution of Chicago after visiting and becoming inspired by an exhibit of Jim Nutt, who also attended the Art Institution on Chicago. He stated in an interview, “I remember being an art student and going to the Whitney in 1974 to see the exhibition of Jim Nutt, the Chicago imagist,...it was then I transferred to school in Chicago, all because of that show.” Jeff Koons would go on to break records with his art, becoming an iconic contemporary artist with his work everywhere from museums to wraps for racecars.

The ordinary or commonplace objects has always been a theme throughout his many artworks, ranging from household items to “kitsch” items such as his balloon sculptures. The topics he takes on is always synonymous with popular culture in the media. His art comes to life in the form of sculptures mimicking the effect of giant balloons, inflatable toys (which are stainless steel and plated with a mirror), etc. Koons is able to take these everyday objects and transform each one into an iconic work of art. With each subject of his art, Koon alters it in a way that brings the subject out of its expected or familiar environment in a way that changes the meaning of it all together. As an example, his most famous piece- the balloon dog, which can typically fit in a child’s hands, stands 12 feet
