My opinion began to change in 1993 after a get-together with co-workers. They would get-together between the work weeks and grill out, drink beer and watch the race. In “93” I became a part of this ritual although I still didn’t care very much about the race I did enjoy the good food and camaraderie. My position on racing would change the following year after I witnessed Jeff Gordon win his first track title in NASCAR’s premier series The Winston Cup (now known as the Sprint Cup) and found that witnessing a live NASCAR event can give you a new appreciation for the sport.

Jeff Gordon had the pole position and had been doing well throughout the race where he led several laps. I was rife with anticipation of his possible winning of the race and by the last lap I was on pins and needles. Gordon held off Rusty Wallace; a seasoned veteran of the sport, for a win of a little more than three seconds.

As he was presented with the track trophy I had unexplainable feelings of pride and happiness.
I’ve been a devoted fan of NASCAR; in particularly Jeff Gordon, ever since witnessing his first win in person. I now rarely miss watching a race and often watch with my stepfather. But there is nothing in the

In her article titled Horse Racing Should Not Be Banned, Antley’s main point and argument is that horse racing is not a cruel sport but there are practices within the sport that are cruel. She starts off her article by giving the audience some background about herself which adds to her creditably. While she used this to her advantage she also brought down her creditability by using words and lingo that the general audience may not know, for example, “break or broke down,” “pulled up,” or “polly tracks.” (Antley). Although this hurts her in the eyes of the audience a few lines down she relates the horse racing world to something everyone may know; driving a car.…

Participation Ribbons? What happened to the days when first place was a huge accomplishment; when trophies were only given to the first place finisher, and second, and third places were lucky to get a ribbon? In our world today, there are many opportunities given to win without really deserving it. One may ask, “How does this hinder us as a people?” Winning without deserving it hinders people because of the following three reasons: it allows failure to be okay, makes them feel as though they are special, and lowers competitiveness.…

I would cheer on the other teams when they looked at little defeated because although it was race, I felt it was important for everyone involved to feel empowered so they would do the same for another runner. I grew up around racing, a culture of fast cars and caring people. My family and I have spent many weekends at the dirt track enjoying the sights smells and sounds. It was not unusual to go racing on a Saturday night and spend the whole time as my Grandfathers crew chief. I lead the pit crew in operations such as backing the car to the trailer, changing tires, and troubleshooting before the car even came off the track. This particular racing is not NASCAR though, the class is called Modified.…

Because of my hobby as a child, I had the chance to do something very big that only about a hundred kids per year have the chance to do. It took a lot work to get to this place that I was going, but it was well worth it. This is something that I do not like to talk about with a lot of people simply because it takes a lot of time to explain.
