Synopsis
Jebadiah Kerbal is the first person given a mission to go to and return from Mars. However, due to complications and mishaps he will find himself stranded on a foreign planet with no hopes of coming home. His trip to Mars starts off relatively smooth but, during the landing sequence one of the fuel tanks bursts open. Now, with his spacecraft’s main engine dead, and no hope of returning to home Jeb decides to do what every great scientist would in his position, he decides to continue his work. He will continue relaying scientific readings and information back to Earth while he has the rations to stay alive. Findings suggest that exposure to radiation and zero gravity lead to adverse health effects for astronauts. According to an article on NASA’s website titled “The Human Body in Space” by Timothy Gushanas, there are five main categories when discussing the effects of space on the body: Gravity fields, isolation and confinement, hostile and closed environments, space radiation and distance from Earth. Four of those five categories have a direct impact on the basic functionality of the human body. While we still don’t know everything about the effects of zero gravity on the human body the amount that we do know is steadily increasing. Even when in a group, participants may experience shifts in attitude and mental sharpness. They may experience a wide range of mental strains from being on a relentless shifting schedule to being confronted with extreme boredom. The constant interaction between whatever crew members are there, and in the case of a solo mission the lack of crew members to talk to can also be a point of stress. This stress has led some astronauts to experience behavioral and cognitive conditions. On top of the mental stresses of an isolated area there is the added stress on your body because there is no source of fresh food.
