In the story of the Glass Castle Jeannette encounters countless events that significantly affect her security and well being. No child should ever be forced to find ways, (although clever), to meet their basic needs. Such as, warmth on a cold day, food when there is none, and safety when in danger. Section 1 begins with an incident that profoundly affected Jeannette to the point that she recalls it in detail. It 's my earliest memory. I was three years old…I was standing on a chair….wearing a dress to cook hot dogs…I felt a blaze of heat on my right side. I turned to see where it was coming from and realized my dress was on fire… (pg 9. para,2).

It is important because all she ever knew was life within the confines of her parents instability, poverty and squalor. Jeannette received a comfort she had not known before. The hospital was clean and shiny…..everyone spoke in polite, calm voices.... I wasn 't used to quiet and order. I also liked that I had my own room….a TV. That was the thing about the hospital. You never had to worry about running out of stuff like food…I would have been happy staying in that hospital forever (pg 11,12. para
