Although the majority of these cases were dismissed by authorities, the most notorious case took place in the Puritan dominated Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Selye developed the idea of stress theory into a theoretical model called General Adaptation Syndrome. He defined stress as a nonspecific demand and response that the body makes. In order to prove his theory he studied animals exposed to negative stimuli and by doing this he found three stages of response: flight or fight, resistance, and exhaustion. At the state of exhaustion animals had or began to develop illness. This showed that prolonged exposure to negative effect produces illness.…

These symptoms vary with everyone. The most common signs of DID are having two or more personalities, dissociative amnesia which is having gaps in the recall of important personal information and everyday events. Some may also refer to themselves as “we” or show signs of hostility and anger. “People with dissociative disorders tend to hide or rationalize symptoms, and may avoid disclosing intrusive thoughts, impulses or actions, inner voices, 'lost time', feeling unreal, and flashbacks (eg visual/auditory hallucinations) due to shame or fear of being thought of as 'crazy'” (Slack). That being the case, it makes it more difficult to diagnose than other disorders.…

This technique helped Paula eliminate three of her alter personalities. Also, the understanding of Paula’s daughter made it easier for Paula to cope with the stress. Even though there has not been much research about DID, due to the lack of research material, the way Dr. Harpin dealt with Paula’s case of DID was according to the treatment, which left the best result for…

The most commonly practiced treatment for the disorder is psychotherapy, though there are many different approaches to it. According to Dr. Steve Bressert, most therapists “take an individual modality (as opposed to family, group or couples therapy) and emphasize the integration of the various personality states into one, cohesive whole personality” (2016). Drug therapies are not effective for dissociative identity disorder, so it is much more difficult to treat then many other mental disorders. Finally according to Brand, Loewenstein and Spiegel: “Given the severe symptomatology and disability associated with DID, iatrogenic harm is far more likely to come from depriving DID patients of treatment that is consistent with expert consensus, treatment guidelines, and current research” (2014, p. 169). Thus, even though the treatments for the disorder are difficult to complete, it is ultimately better for the patient than if they simply do not seek treatment.…
