Jeanette Walls Influence

The Walls have lived a sporadic lifestyle, constantly picking up and moving place. Throughout the adolescent life of Jeanette Walls, she has lived in many different places (Battle Mountain, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Midland). In the memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls was influenced in many ways, but the one location she was influenced most was the second trip to Phoenix. Their lives changed for the better in many ways. The family finally begins to develop roots in Phoenix very fast, and the overall lives of the parents and kids improves because of new amenities and toys. Although Jeanette was influenced everywhere she went, Phoenix had the strongest impact on her. Upon their arrival to Phoenix, Jeanette's father got himself a job in the booming electricians union. Jeanette felt a direct impact from her mother's work because she would help her mother select inspirations for her to paint. In return, she began to understand the love of art, and her mother even helped her learn a little bit herself. It was not just art though. Jeanette felted an impact at school as well. She could not believe the beauty of the new school building, and the amenities that came with it. She also went on to say that she was “moved to a reading group for gifted children” (95). This group allowed Jeanette to challenge herself more as a person and a learner, and helped her develop crucial skills for the future. The borderline nomadic lifestyle that the Walls live can be beneficial, as well as harmful for the kids. The lives that Rex puts this family through is not one that anybody deserves to experience. However, for Jeanette, her time in Phoenix had a very positive influence on her. She began to live a lifestyle more as a child, but as well as getting to experience new things because of the better
