Jean Timmons Biography

My grandparents, John Bernard “Jack” Timmons and Ellen Amanda “Ella” were married 20 April 1918 in a Catholic Church in Chicago, Illinois. Their daughter, Jean was born almost four years later in 1922. I believe I recall my mother saying that her mother had a difficult time carrying a child and miscarried two or three babies prior to Jean being born but, I don’t remember any specific details. After Jean there was no more children born to Jack and Ella.
Jean Timmons was the only child of Jack and Ella. Born and raised Catholic in Chicago, Illinois on 9 June 1922.
Apparently, following her birth, Jean’s mother had complications and required surgery. The Doctors didn’t think she was going to survive. One of the Doctors reported that Ella had just had a baby, so they did they could to try to save her life. As the story I was told goes: they just threw her insides back in and stitched her back up. Needless to say Ella did survive the ordeal but, my mother reported that Ella had internal problems with her abdomen the rest of her life.

One day Jean had her doll outside and the boy happened to be over and wanted to hold it. Jean reluctantly let the boy hold her doll and warned him to be careful. As she had feared the boy dropped her doll and shattered the whole back of the head. Jean was so upset and cried fearing her favorite doll was all but ruined. Her mother gathered up shattered remains of the head and spent hours painstakingly gluing the pieces back together. The back of the head resembled a jigsaw puzzle but, with one major flaw, there was a piece missing leaving a hole in the head. Her mother did what any good mother would do and made a bonnet for her head and my mom said you would never know it had been broken. And Jean went on to spend many more years of enjoyment with her
