Starting a family is a choice, it should not be forced upon you. The room was bright and sun filled. Jean Koelbl had pictures of her family up and down the walls, it showed how much her family means to her. Jean was there to drive her kids to sports and make them dinner, but most importantly she was there to support her children. Losing a child helped Jean be her best example and understand love to another level. She felt that one will not understand love until a child is given. Jean said, “I would drop anything for my children or their families”. Jean worked full time for seven years until her first child was born, and then she transitioned to part time. She said “it is the worst feeling to know your kids that you love so much are at daycare and you cannot spend every waking moment with them.” October 19th, 1985, a dreadful day had occurred at day care while Jean was at work. She got a call and she was told that her oldest son only, three at the time, had been rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. In an obvious state of panic, Jean sped to the hospital to witness her first born, baby, son unconscious with tubes in his nose, and bruises on his arms. Her heart broke and she cried out asking anyone and everyone if they what had happened. At day care that day her son, Tony, was playing on a rocking chair, he lost his footing and his head got lodged in between the chair poles. They told Jean the only reason her son was still alive was because of the tube that was going into his nose giving his body oxygen. His esophagus was ruptured and there was no chance of saving his young life.
That day, Jean had went home and saw her three other babies sitting on the couch, completely naive and unaware of what had happened that day, because they were too young to understand. She realized then, that being the perfect example is nearly impossible and that it is always great to strive to be the perfect mother, but it will never be done. The sudden loss of a child is an indescribable situation and Jean was in a tough spot.
