What is the Price of Ambition?

Ambition brings out jealousy in people. In life, many people chase a certain goal with great ambition. During the path towards their goal, they compare themselves to other people, bringing out insecurities, and in the end, leading to jealousy. Jealousy is a powerful emotion that can drive people to do irrational things. For example, In Act I Scene II of Julius Caesar, Cassius was conversing with Brutus. During their conversation Cassius points out that Caesar was treated like a god by the Romans even though he is only a man. People will stray from what they’re comfortable with in order to achieve their goals. Other times they 're willing to go beyond what they 're capable of. An example of this would be when the conspirators in Julius Caesar killed Caesar to satisfy their jealousy toward his rise to power. Cassius had even proposed to kill Antony, who was Caesars right hand man, if he got in the way. Even after people achieve their goal, their ambition & greed doesn 't fade away. People naturally want more. When Kino found the pearl it sparked the greed in people, everyone wanted to take part in Kino 's riches. In The Pearl, Coyotito was stung by a scorpion & the doctor refused to heal Coyotito up until Kino found the pearl. Even though Coyotito was miraculously healed when the doctor arrived, the doctor purposefully poisoned the son again & healed him just to get in on Kino 's new-found riches.

The loss of innocence is a consequence of ambition. Ambition often times changes a person 's personality. Desire driven by ambition can have a huge impact on human behavior.
In the beginning of The Pearl, Kino was a very easy going man and was content with what he had. However when he discovered the pearl, Kino began to lose his innocence as his ambition toward protecting the pearl took over. The pearl began as a symbol of hope & a new beginning, but as the story progressed the pearl proved to be a disruptive force towards Kino 's
