The novel Scarlet Letter is mainly about sin, adultery, guilt, deception, revenge and courage. After reading the Scarlet letter, I can say that the author beautifully wrote it. Such helpfulness was found in her,—so much power to do, and power to sympathize,—that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength” (Hawthorne, 1850, pg. 242-243). This quote stood out to me the most because the villager starts seeing Hester in a different light. The scarlet letter ‘A’ supposed to stand for ‘adultery’ and shame her, however, it empowers her because it strengthens her as a strong woman. As a result, the villager sees how Hester had changed by changing the meaning of the scarlet letter to other eyes. From my perspective, Hester turns her shame into courage. She redefines herself and refuses to be defined by her community’s judgment. She never let the community bring her down. This makes me happy because the scarlet letter ‘A’ transforms its meaning from sinful to a symbol of strength and that Hester is a capable
