The theme of all three readings revolve around envy and jealousy. In The Kite Runner, Amir shows animosity towards his father Baba because he is showing affection and compassion towards his best friend Hassan. In spite of his father providing Amir with a lot of things, one thing he feels missing is compassion from his father. In the poem Envy, the title is a portrayal of the poem. The narrator is jealous of everything the other boy has. Buddha once said, “He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.” Jealousy is a trait that almost everyone has, but the ones that do not show animosity towards others depict a great deal of pride and modesty. In Specifications for a Hero, the narrator shows envy when the back catcher (also the boy that bullied him) gets hit with a foul ball in the face. The catcher gets up and wants to keep playing. One of the spectators thinks the young man is courageous and yells from the stands, “Tough kid!” This man was the narrator’s father. In The Kite Runner, Amir looks to his dad for a sense of re-assurance, while in Specifications for a Hero, the narrator needs to prove himself to his peers because he has to lie to fit in. The narrator of the poem Envy, is someone that is envious of many things. He is insecure in his own body, so he has to admire and envy the traits of someone else. All characters portray a sense of being uncomfortable in their own skin and needing to act in a different way to fit in. Amir finds little things that he prides himself and his dad on. One time, while his dad was giving a speech during the opening of the orphanage his hat flew off. Amir ran and picked it up. The audience applauded and Amir was very proud of him and his dad. Him and his dad do not really have any similarities, so this made Amir feel
