When referring to jealousy as a threat in a current relationship, Dr. Gleason defines jealousy as the unhappy combination of hurt, anger, and fear that occurs when people face potential loss of a valued relationship to a real or imagined rival. In the popular show Friends, we see how jealousy takes over the emotions of one of the characters. The perception of the multifaced emotion has evolved through the recent time periods. Jealousy can be detrimental for relationships when one person perceives the threat and the other one does not. Both positive and negative views have been taken from the emotion over time.
Rachel Green and Ross Geller are two of the six main characters from the American show Friends. In the scene provided, Rachel and Ross are a couple. Incited by jealousy, Ross demonstrates the unhappy combination of hurt, anger, and fear when he perceives Mark, Rachel’s attractive coworker, as a threat to their relationship. Fear quickly takes over Ross’s emotions when he calls Rachel and Mark answers instead. When Ross hears a man’s voice who he does not recognize, he imagines Mark as the “imagined rival”. Soon after Mark hands over the phone to Rachel, Ross starts interrogating Rachel about Mark; however, Rachel is unconscious of Ross’s feelings and the potential threat. Friends was released in 1994, but if we were to play this scene throughout different time periods, the public’s reaction would have varied. For example, in the 50’s, Ross’ reaction of jealousy would have been perceived as a demonstration of love to Rachel. Contrastively, by the 80’s his actions would have been perceived as a form of insecurity. Today, from our Netflix culture, Ross reflects both his love and insecurities. This is an important component to the situation because it has the potential to affect how the other person in the relationship reacts to his/her partner’s
