Gary Soto’s vivid imagery and religious allusions recreate an event where sin and guilt leads him to reflect upon his actions as a six-year-old child. In the beginning of A Summer Life, Gary Soto reveals that he has a religious background by quoting that “he knew enough about hell” and that he “was holy in almost every bone”. In addition to his religiously influenced statements, he also states “angels flopping”. The recurrence of allusions from the bible in the introductory passage emphasizes that Soto knew about God and therefore, the consequences of sin even at a young age.…

Jealousy is just another part of everyday life. As shown in Bobbie Ann Mason 's "Being Country", the story just shows that it 's normal to be envious of others and just look at positive things in their lives while ignoring the negative things. For example, when Mason 's family was having dinner, instead of looking at it like a feast because of the plentiful food her family had. Mason looked at it as "fuel for work". Instead of always looking at the positive side, we as humans like to generate an unreasonable conclusion from what 's bad in our lives to what 's good in someone else 's.…

In this story many of the children on Venus are jealous of Margot’s opportunities and previous life on earth. When children are jealous, they turn against Margot. One example is when she is reading the poem, instead of listening to Margot the students shut her down without even listening. Just because students are jealous it does not mean that they can bully Margot. While this is important theme it is easily seen that if it weren’t for Margot not thinking about what she said or did that this wouldn’t have happened, so overall the important point is that it is needed for everyone to take a minute an think about the results in the end from what they…

In addition, this shows how jealousy changes a person. In the beginning the kids are very impolite to Margot and tease her a lot, but clearly that wasn’t their normal selves. The reason is, the kids are being so caught up in their jealousy they didn’t realize what they were doing was wrong, but, only until they came back inside did they realize that they locked Margot in a closet. The reason they take so long to get Margot out of the closet is because they are ashamed of themselves and can’t believe what they have done. Their harsh actions really hurt Margot and left her feeling miserable, since they took away the only thing that Margot really loved.…
