Understanding Envy
The Definition of Envy
According to Smith and Kim (2007), envy is “an unpleasant, often painful emotion characterized by feelings of inferiority, hostility, and resentment caused by an awareness of a desired attribute enjoyed by another person or group of persons” (p. 46). As said by Kant (1780/1997), what lies at the foundation of envy is the comparison of oneself to a better performing person. At the idea of envy, it is not the pain that occurs when other people excel in a particular activity or in a possession of a better physical attribute, but rather, it is the pain that occurs when someone is superior to self. At some other research (van de Ven, Zeelenberg, & Pieters, 2009), envious feelings are sometimes linked to

The two words are theoretically different, but still, envy is regarded as the same with jealousy, “an aversive emotion experienced when a valued social relationship is threatened” (DelPriore, Hill, & Buss, 2012, p. 317). According to Ben-Ze’ev (2001), “What causes conflation of envy and jealousy are the frequency of their co-occurrence and the discomfort with envy's moral connotations” (p. 281). Smith & Kim (2007) further explained the differences between the two words:
Envy typically involves two people and occurs when one lacks something enjoyed by another. The target of envy may be a person or a group of persons, but the focus of envy is that one lacks something compared with a specific target, whether it be a target individual or target group. Jealousy typically involves three people and occurs when one fears losing someone to another person. Envy and jealousy result from different situations, generate distinct appraisals, and produce distinctive emotional experiences. (p. 47)

The researchers addressed that there are two types of envy, a positive one which is called benign envy, and a negative form of envy which is called malicious envy. People who are aggravated to someone superior to them with the chances of pulling the envied people down to their level belong to maliciously envious people (van de Ven et al., 2011a). According to van de Ven et al. (2009), they found out that “there is emotional pain but no motivational gain for self-improvement” to those people who engage to malicious envy (p.

Jealousy comes when one's focus is taken off God and put upon the world. Hebrews 13:4 states “but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” God's Word also states in I Corinthians 3:17 “if any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy.” The purity of mankind should be maintained, therefore the jealous husband was to bring her before the priest who would carry out all the law. Devils love the destruction of relations between a man and his wife.…

On the surface, envy seems to be one of the deadly vices that many believe is very clear cut. Julie Barnhill states in her article ‘The Comparison Trap’, “every day, everywhere, from every age bracket, and even despite our faith in Jesus Christ, we size each other up, comparing supposed weaknesses and trying to make ourselves feel better by ignoring or brushing off one another” (Barnhill, 2004). When looking at envy this way it seems that this vice is a superficial, unimportant part of life that we just need to deal with. A survey conducted in 2008-2009 asked respondents to rate what they believed to be the deadliest sin to be and envy was rated last with 0% by all respondents, male and female (Capps & Haupt, 2011). Rebecca DeYoung states…

According to Mead,“ We tend to regard the success of people close at hand , within our small groups ,as a threat (Mead,Lines 6-7).” This quote explains that we envy people who are more or as successful as we are. This saying says that Americans help each other's thinking that they will get repaid by being successful. People don't understand that being envious of others, will only worsen…

According to Saint Lucian poet Derek Walcott, “The discontent that lies in the human condition is not satisfied simply by material things.” Throughout history it has been proven time and time again, that those who rely on material objects such as money, stature, and fortune, often find themselves in a place of dissatisfaction, and envy. These negative feelings occur for no good reason other than the fact that “material things” are just “things”, and have no real meaning or purpose. Concepts like meaningful relationships and empathy, two ideas that are needed to lead a happy and in some cases moral life, are concepts that people who focus solely on status, and riches often fail to understand. The idea of what happens when one has an intense…

Jealousy is just another part of everyday life. As shown in Bobbie Ann Mason 's "Being Country", the story just shows that it 's normal to be envious of others and just look at positive things in their lives while ignoring the negative things. For example, when Mason 's family was having dinner, instead of looking at it like a feast because of the plentiful food her family had. Mason looked at it as "fuel for work". Instead of always looking at the positive side, we as humans like to generate an unreasonable conclusion from what 's bad in our lives to what 's good in someone else 's.…

Isaac Asimov is a science fiction writer that wrote the article And I Will Serve Us Right in 1964 to predict the technology of 2014. He first explains to us his father’s connection to him, and the two situations in which jealousy should not be possible: when the father surpasses the son, and when the student surpasses the teacher.
