Alyssa woke up and found out her parents had left early for work. They promised her that her lunch would be prepared by them but that did not happen. Panic mode began and scrambled around to make her lunch. She quickly grabbed an avocado, a banana, some milk and threw it in the blender. While keeping one hand on the blender, she was trying to reciting the poem for French class. Once her smoothie was made, she shuffled through the drawer found a bottle and filled it up. She grabbed her bag and bolted out the door. Finally, she made it to class but before entering she began with reading the quote that was written on the chalkboard across the room. The phrase was written in simple plain style in chalk, "Je suis desolee d 'etre en retard"[translation: …show more content…
Madame Moreau explains (in French), "Today is a new module and I want to you learn how to converse in French. I have been hearing a lot of English but starting now, if I hear any English being spoken you would have to sit by yourself." All the slackers of the class knew that sitting alone would mean that they would be mentored by the other above average students. Alyssia as always came late but today she knew her seat had changed and there was a bright orange seat in the center of the room. She apologized for being late, and accepted her poem then followed down the grid of tables and took her …show more content…
That evening they went over Kelsey 's house to work on this assignment together. Kelsey lived with her older brother who was not around that much and it didn 't seem like she had a elder figure in the house as opposed to Alyssia who stayed at home with her parents. Alyssia had more discipline in keeping things tidy and following rules. Kelsey fixed up the house a little and made room on the coffee table to get started. "So, what characters did you have in mind, Alyssia?". "I want something small that will not attract too much attention and something I can change out of pretty quickly." Kelsey went in her closet and pulled out a bear costume, this was to represent Jojo the bear from a children 's book they read in class a week ago. Alyssia declined this offer because it was a full costume that required changing into. The next option Kelsey presented was Marie Antoinette. Alyssia contemplated and she thought to herself, "This means I have to wear a fancy dress and change in and out of it. I do not want to do that in the school bathroom." She then remembered in history class the famous Marie Antoinette quote, "Hey kelsey, do you know that quote from Marie Antoinette of "Let them eat cake, [if they don 't have bread]". "Oh right that hilarious quote, she was pretty but how could she take on so much cake calories" replied Kelsey. "This is not what that quote was about. It was more about the history and the people not

This week, our class had the chance to read four interesting poems of Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, We Real Cool, Mad Girl’s Love Song, and Hanging Fire. Each of these poems highlight the important role that imagery and other poetic devices play into an interpretation of a poem and how crucial it is to understand the perceptive of a poem’s speaker. The poem I enjoyed the most this week was Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde. On the surface, Hanging Fire is about a 14 year-old who struggles with typical adolescent things such as bad skin, boy problems, school dances, and braces. However, once we re-read the poem and took the time to analysis it, it because quite clear that teenaged problems are not the only things troubling the speaker.…

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

Alice Notley’s The Descent of Alette is an epic poem that shows the relationship between gender, sex, and the human body. By doing so, Notley challenges the traditional form of an epic poem through her use of a female hero and a series of lyric poems that create an epic poem. Here, we see two sets of binaries: female hero/male hero and lyric poem/epic poem. Additionally, these binaries are a function of hierarchy. By resisting traditional binaries, Notley shows equality through an open space for equal heterogeneous forms.…

In the poem,"Minerva Jones" by Edgar Lee Masters ,he writes about the sad life of an old crippled lady who was hated. I learned that this person is a writer of poetry and isn 't very pleasant looking from how Masters describes her. The person she speaks about in the poem are "Butch" Weldy and Doctor Meyers, who have different poems of their own as well. " Butch" Weldy is the one that hunts down Minerva (Goddess of Wisdom) and Doctor Meyers is the one that attempts to save her. The poet lets us know that small-town America is very judgmental because you can say that those who were wise were the ones being judged("hunts") by their appearance and their beliefs.…

Chrystos is making the argument that all white people have things that they had no idea that they originated from Native American culture and that in a way they are disgracing their culture and beliefs. She assumes that we don’t have Native roots until the end of the poem saying that maybe we have a grandma who was Native American. She is making the stereotype that white people don’t have any regard for other cultures and that whites think they are superior to others. I think “it” is referring to some people who don’t know very much about other cultures and were something or own something without knowing its roots. She does seem somewhat angry because she just wants them to know where the things they have truly came from and how to respect…

Using Carpe Diem to Manipulate Women Andrew Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress,” Robert Herrick’s “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time,” and Richard Wilbur’s “A Late Aubade” all use the idea of seizing the day to seduce women. The first two poems address women who are resisting having sex and the poets are pressuring them to remember that time and their youth is fleeting and they’ll die virgin old maids if they don’t make love and get married while they are still young and attractive. Wilbur’s poem differs in that he has already made love to the woman he is talking to and is entreating her to stay in bed and not get up, saying that time spent in bed with him is the best use of her time. An aubade is a lover’s farewell song, usually sung at…

In the third poem, the speaker addresses the beloved for the first time. He has stepped into new territory and states that he had not known awe or desire before he met her. He begs her to choose him as a servant and to forgive the mistakes he is going to make. Three different images or ideas predominate the poem: a religious aspect, the concept of love as serving and the speaker’s youth and inexperience. After the trochees of the first two poems, the iambic metre of the third poem creates a sense of increased tempo.…
