This season was one of the best experiences for me in my life. The month of October was really stressful with Drama and everything else that was going on for me, but it was worth it especially for band. The field show solo was an amazing opportunity for me and it was an honor to be given the privilege to perform it. I got to connect with more band members a lot more than I did last year. Early jazz is a combination of different musical styles, most of which are associated with African-Americans. The central figures were Early Blues Singers (Robert Johnson), Jazz moved "up the river" to Chicago (Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton), and Dixieland - New Orleans (King Oliver). The blues, which had influenced jazz from the beginning, became increasingly popular due to singers like Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith and Bessie Smith---the latter selling thousands of discs, including a national hit, “Down Hearted Blues”. The period from the end of the First World War until the start of the Depression in 1929 is known as the "Jazz Age"(Jazz History). Jazz had become popular music in North America, although older generations considered the music…

Looking back, I never thought this day would arrive so fast. Not the day of writing the self review, but Music Night. I can remember looking at the white-board as Mr. Snodgrass was writing down the date of the performances, and thinking about why he was bothering to tell us about them so soon. The two months really did pass quickly though, and before I knew it, it was December 6th, and Music Night. While I would normally not be pleased about time moving so fast, in this case I really cannot say that I have any complaints; Mr Snodgrass informed us of what was coming very early on, and he worked with us every day to prepare for it.…

Reflecting on the past long, but yet short four years of high school, I cannot help but be exhilarated for the next four to come. I can remember the first day that I walked into the JROTC room like it was just yesterday, butterflies floating in my stomach, my nerves everywhere with a smile on my face because I knew that is where I belong. As time went I took advantage of the program by joining the Armed Drill team as another cadet. Within one year of hard work and innumerable amount of practice I became a squad leader following up to be the first female commander of the Armed Drill team that Sam Houston High has seen. With the proficiency that JROTC has taught me, I decided that it was time to seek out my dream by talking to a recruiter.…

Dylan Scallo Mrs. Glaser English 3 Honors 29 May 2015 Jazz comes in a variety of genres: dixieland, bebop, blues. Each genre contains its own unique quality that distinguishes itself from the rest, whether the difference is the steady beat of a drum, the focus on a pianist’s melody, or the fast tempo kept throughout a piece of music. The influx of jazz styles was welcomed by the people in the late twentieth century who appreciated a variety of music to choose from. The music reflects what was going on during the time period, which is why jazz continued to evolve into so many styles, but this acceptance was different for those in the early years of jazz. Jazz originated in New Orleans where improvising and solo performances were the heart…

I have had some of the most incredible moments of my life at concerts. Seeing bands you love live and in person can make you love the band even more. Jumping around and singing to the lyrics is infectious and you feel as though the people around you are your family. They all love the band like you do, know all the lyrics like you do, and cheer loudly like you do. When the band’s lyrics are very inspirational or have helped you through a hard time, going to their live show is especially breathtaking.…

And All That Jazz When someone mentions the word jazz most people probably picture something along the lines of a saxophone player standing on a street corner in the French quarter of New Orleans. Or a thought of the roaring 20s' and imagine your self at a party where everyone is dancing to the sound of a live band with trumpets, saxophones, and trombones. However these are actually surprisingly accurate to what jazz really is. But how did such an innovative type of music come about? Who was the first one to bend the rules of music and create a whole new genre? Who created these versatile instruments that we find in a modern day jazz band?…
