Jazz Night Concert Report
The concert that I chose to attend was Jazz Night which was held at the Arnette Scott Ward performing Arts Center on the Pecos campus. I decided to show up to this performance because I have always had an appreciation for the skill and talent it requires to play an instrument. I was pleased by the concert because I heard a wide spectrum of timbre, and I was especially thrilled because I got to hear the brassy sound given off by the trumpets. I used to be a trumpet player so I enjoy to listen to the sounds it can produce. The Jazz Night consisted of four groups that each performed their own unique variation of Jazz music. I was amazed by all the performances, even the Vocal Jazz which I thought was going to be my least

Throughout the night there was many different solos and that definitely kept my attention because it takes courage and also it is peaceful to hear the sound of an individual instrument by itself. My mood mostly stayed pretty consistent until the the Jazz Combo Group 2 performed “ Soy Califa” which added some suspense and made me a bit curious of the song was going to end. I was very pleased because I got to experience many different genres of Jazz music. Traditional Jazz, Latin Jazz, Vocal Jazz, and Big Band were all the forms of Jazz I listened to throughout the night. Ted Goddard, the director for the Jazz Combo groups would briefly explain a little information about the pieces which was helpful because he mentioned vocab words that we have learned in class. The performance itself I thought was very professional and I do not think there was anything wrong. I am an easy person to please and since it was free I was not judgemental of anything.
To me this was a new experience. I never had been to any live Jazz performance in my life so this was actually a fun event. Now I can say I’ve been to a live Jazz performance. At the beginning of the semester I did my project on the city of Chicago. Through that I learned how Jazz originated there. In the future I hope to travel to Chicago and go visit some of the Jazz clubs which are known across the nation. The most famous restaurant in the city is called Andy’s jazz club which features live jazz music while guests enjoy their

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…

The first combo performed renditions of four popular Jazz standards: “Summertime” by 20th century American composer George Gershwin, “Bags and Trane" by Milt Jackson of the Modern Jazz Quartet fame, “Angel Eyes” by Matt Dennis and Earl Brent, and finally “One Note Samba” by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Excluding the instrumental “Bags and Trane”, each of the songs catered to complement vocalist Oriana Wisdom’s soulful singing and the call-and-response interplay of alto saxophonist Chris Suarez’s lyrical sax lines during the choruses. The combo opened the concert with Gershwin’s “Summertime”. The group perfomed the song in a slow ballad-esque form, arranged to highlight Wisdom’s luscious singing highly reminiscent of famed Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. The quiet intimacy of the piece was complemented by drummer Zach Benator’s subtle brushed rhythm and bassist David Schroeder’s slow crawling bass line.…

“Introducing the Centerville Jazz Band!” This phrase will forever be in my memory. The concert was presented by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Music’s UNC Jazz Band on Saturday, October 10th, 2015. The concert venue was located at UNC Kenan Music Building’s Rehearsal Hall. It started from 8pm to 9.40 pm. Compared to all the other concerts that I have gone to, the UNC Jazz Band concert was a definite change in atmosphere as it was a large band consisted of students. The stage was set up really well and has a nice lighting.…

The concert that I attended was the Sphinx Virtuosi, Latin Voyages, which occurred on October 5th, 2016, 7:30 pm at the Hammer Theatre. With regards to the venue, it appeared to be an oval shaped movie theatre. It had many of the similar characteristics of a cinema. For example, the seating arrangements, relaxing ambience and lights on either sides of the theatre. Subsequently, there were a few differences.…

The jazz ensemble was set up in straight rows, which was different from the classical ensemble. From what I could tell the performers seemed excited to start playing, they were probably as excited as myself, if not more, to be able to play alongside Stuart Mack. Stuart is a very talented musician both from what I read in the program and from seeing him perform throughout the concert. From the audience clapping and being able to feel more relaxed during the performances to actually enjoying the solos…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

The Unwritten Rules of a College Education Just because a student receives a four-year bachelor’s degree from a college or university does not mean that student received four years of a college education. College educations encompass much more learning than a minimum number of credit hours the school requires for students to graduate. Students who educate themselves outside of their classrooms culturally put themselves several steps ahead of those who spend all their time in their rooms playing video games and watching television and movies instead. The latter students may as well have attended a community college closer to their homes or not have attended any postsecondary school, saving them time and money. Thomas B. Jones, author of “The…
