The Northampton Jazz festival is an entirely volunteer run 301 (c)3 organization that is located in Northampton, MA. The Organization puts on a main event that is a free week long jazz festival taking place in the early autumn. There are three other musical events throughout the year that are meant for fundraising. The festival encourages the growth and exploration of jazz in the Pioneer Valley while supporting Jazz musicians. The festival features well known national acts, local artists and aspiring students. This is a relatively small organization that relies entirely on in kind donations, sponsors and one small government grant. The budget for the fiscal year is around $50,000, any profit made goes to the Northampton Jazz Festival Music …show more content…
Each year the organization offers assistance in securing new instruments or equipments for schools in need. Due to the small size and the fact that the organization is only a few years old most years it is lucky to break even. I decided to become involved with this organization because it is relatively new and still in the early stages of it’s life cycle. I work in a large, well established, very structured nonprofit organization that in many ways mirrors a corporation. As a result I wanted to be involved with a small organization in which everyone knows each other and is still easily excitable and one that I could take part in shaping. Another motive was that I have only been exposed to large nonprofit organizations that are matured and I wanted to experience a diverse mix of nonprofits so I am more prepared in my career to deal with a diverse mix of organizations as various life stages. I first met S.C the festival's president at a board fair where I introduced myself and had a brief conversation before agreeing to meet later in the week for a more formal discussion about myself and the organization.
