The Museum of Contemporary Art of North Miami held an evening jazz concert open to the public featuring the jazz band Karina Iglesias & the Nu-Thang. Karina Iglesias and the Nu-Thang included Karina Iglesias as the lead vocalist, accompanied by Brian Robertson on the piano, James McCoy on bass, and Kevin Abanto on drums. This concert consisted of one set of six songs that last for an hour and fifteen minutes. I wanted to attend this concert because Karina Iglesias appeared as a finalist on the national television show “The Voice”. Later that night, Karina Iglesias was awarded the “Women Who Inspire” award by the City of North Miami’s Mayor in celebration of North Miami’s Women’s History Month. Karina Iglesias & the Nu-Thang sound consisted of combination of jazz, rhythm & blues, hip-hop, pop, and blues. I never knew who this band was before attending the show but knew majority of the songs that were played because they …show more content…
The dynamics in this song alternated a couple times between pianissimo and fortissimo. The tempo of this song was a faster than the usually slow speed I usually this song played in. The melody was repeated with some variations. The solo by Brian Robertson in this piece had a sad sound because of all the minor keys he hit with a combination of playing softly. Overall, this piece was soothing and nice to listen to and got a big applause from the audience. “Hotline Bling” by Drake had a mesh of polyphonic and homophonic textures and a lively tempo. This cover piece another beautifully performed piece by Karina Iglesias & the Nu-Thang. The tempo alternated between accelerando and ritardando a couple of times. The dissonant chords that were used resolved and were played at a slower tempo than the chorus. The mutes were timed perfectly with the rhythm. I liked this cover piece because the clarity and harmony between all the instruments

This piece begins with a tranquil woodwind choir with other instruments gradually joining in. The tempo is andante, as it is moderately slow, yet more of a simple pace. This work takes advantage of dynamics heavily, as it varies from pianissimo with a solo flute to a gorgeous and strong fortissimo dynamic of the whole ensemble. This piece also varies in texture quite a bit, as it alternates between monophonic soloist sections and grand homophonic sections of the whole band. Most of the melodic lines are smooth and legato, yet are disrupted by the pointed and staccato figures of the percussion section that underscore the longer lines of the wind instruments.…

I believe this song would fall into the category of cool jazz. I thought this was a really neat way to start out a concert, especially for someone who had never attended a jazz concert before. The second song which was played also caught my attention was Desafinado. This song I believe fell into the category of cool jazz.…

This song has a wide dynamic range due to the “extremely soft passages as well as extremely loud passages” (Elements of Music). The rhythm patterns change throughout this piece. It begins to slow then changes to a faster pace. Along with changing rhythmic patterns there is a change in melody. The song changes from low to high pitches.…

The concert venue was located at UNC Kenan Music Building’s Rehearsal Hall. It started from 8pm to 9.40 pm. Now there were a couple songs in this but I really enjoyed the first one the best, so I focused on that song more but many of the songs are similar in there beat. This concert had four instruments all of which were string instruments which allowed for the song to flow better with each instrument. I love the sound of violin and viola together, while the cello and guitar are strumming at a lower beat than them. Overall this concert was amazing I could see and hear so much beauty through the entire performance.…

The crowed loved when Professor Tolson talked about how to bring a crowed to the performance, he bribes his students with bonus points. When the directors talk and interact with the audience during performances, it makes the performances much more enjoyable. It gives the audience time to take in the music they just heard and learn a little more about the jazz ensemble. My favorite song of the night was a 1938-2008 song called, “Povo” by Freddie Hubbard and arranged by Erik Morales.…

This does not possess a catchy melody, but one that has a jagged contour and great complexity, skipping up and down the piano. The voices of the characters, likewise, are required to produce many different tones in order to give more complexity to this melody. I believe the intent of this piece was communicated very well, giving the readers a story of true love and how powerful it can be. Even though the audience knew the ending of this story, they were still able to feel through the performance how much the characters had loved each other…
