Question 1

I would like to share a site for Jazz chants. The main reason I chose this method is because I love poetry and rhyming. I know it's elementary, but I feel that it is easy to memorize things if they rhyme. Check out this link.

Question 2

The approaches to teaching reading were essential information to me. My interest arose on the matter when the text informed me that students who do not learn to read in elementary school start secondary school as severe underachievers (90). Knowing this information leads me to want to know how to help these students achieve success in school. In their emergent literacy stage of learning, we as teachers need to provide student with a desire to read.

During our concert in which the band played 10 pieces, none of them was an original creation of the band. They were all popular songs or pieces that had endured the experience of time but were still shining and captivating under the mastery and the dexterity of these senior musicians. Thus, the vitality of their contribution outstood in their effort to render the musical pieces they played in their original form, although subject to their individual taste expressed in their individual improvisation. Their effort is a resounding of their fascination with this original form of jazz and their quest to make more contempory listener acquainted with this old genre in a live style performance. Their contribution is vital in keeping the genre alive besides its recorded versions available in audio and video format such as cassett, CD, and…

I have now been to a handful of jazz performances and I would have to say that this is my favorite. In this jazz ensemble, Jerry stated this particular ensemble was full of music majors, jazz majors, music educators, and graduates. I like seeing jazz ensembles that are mixed up with young and old, male and female.…

I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. The next day, my top-secret contraband came in with me, in the form of a book. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

Summary: This book focuses on the different forms of Jazz music that have been developed throughout the years. It starts at the beginning when Jazz was created in the post-slavery society of America and continues up to modern day artists such as Armstrong and Ellington. Justification: Since I am not sure exactly what type of music he likes, I added another book about Jazz. I think that this book will be a hit because there is so much good information in this picture book. The pictures are also really well drawn, so you can see what is going on within the text.…

Whole Word Stephen Krashen states that “whole language” another term for whole word involves instilling a love of literature, problem solving and critical thinking, collaboration, authenticity and personalized learning (2002, p. 32). Bette Bergeron in her paper on what the term whole language means found that there is a wide discrepancy amongst those that believe in whole word with research results that showed that twenty three point four percent felt that it was a philosophy while thirty four point four feel that it is an approach (1990, p.312). Scholars allude to the fact that when reading phonetically a child has difficulty understanding the full meaning of the text and if they only read it once or twice may not understand the context…

Syncopation is a “rhythmic phenomenon most easily understood as accents that don’t occur on a main beat,” (Gridley, 45) and is a characteristic that is widely associated with Jazz. This characteristic takes its roots in both Africa and Europe, but it is predominately known in Africa. While the highly rhythmic nature of Jazz comes from ragtime and the blues (and therefore African in origin), other characteristics are European in origin. Improvisation is a major part of Jazz and “it has been an important element of music since the beginning of time, and only recently in history was it difficult to find in European concert music” (Gridley, 44). Another feature of Jazz is harmony.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
