Bruises hurt. Growing up with the uncomfortable yellow-green of an old battle wound sustained from being an adventurous kid wasn't much of a surprise. The off-shade violet of a deep one, or the angry red of an underdeveloped one, on the other hand, is a more recent discovery. Receiving them daily has become a required hindrance when being chased by your neighbor's sex crazed Pit bull. I could have gotten a car to avoid him --my town is small and my mother never thought I needed one--…

Have you ever heard of Jack Wright? Not many students in his college heard of him either. By teachers he’s known as the quiet, shy, little Einstein who’s a hard and an ambitious worker. You rarely see Jack because he’s either in class or in his dormitory doing homework or studying for tests ahead of time. Jack always gets prefect scores on his papers, tests and quizzes, which makes a lot of the other students jealous and furious.…

I sat against the hot rock, looking out into the picturesque view in front. It was peaceful, the sound of the creek in the background, the hot sun on my face, it was just what I needed. I must have merged with landscape, because a small dragonfly landed near my arm. I looked at it, I saw a small animal wriggling in its mouth, a mosquito, that’s what it was. Bit by bit the dragonfly ate the mosquito.…

    Pidgin Monologue

When most people find out that my mom grew up in Papua New Guinea, an Oceanian country above Australia, they look confused. I imagine a thought similar to a famous Mean Girls quote pops into their head: “If your mom’s from Papua New Guinea, why is she white?” But of course, you can’t just ask people why they’re white. While there, they not created a written language based off the natives’ oral language, Pidgin, but also translated the Bible into Pidgin.…
