His theory was that religion was created by the weaker human beings to trick those that are stronger than them to not hurt or kill other beings. By making them believe that there was a place in the afterlife where he could have whatever he wanted if he didn’t do those things, they would have peace and could focus on the more important aspects of living. However as time went on, civilizations all over the world had their own idea of religion and what the afterlife was like. Therefore when one was mentioned to someone of a different faith it could potentially start wars. For example, Oswalt said that people changed their behavior to be morally good so they would get into the afterlife, while both Bering and Johnson said people change their behavior for the better because they knew someone was watching them. However a point that was different was the idea of social cooperation. Bering and Johnson stated how people with a belief system were more likely to work together, while Oswalt only spoke of them not cooperating and starting wars over their beliefs.
