Ladies and gentlemen of the Jury,

On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee looked forward to another eventful exciting day at Woodlawn High School. Sadly this was not any ordinary day when the afternoon came around and Hae went missing. This was undoubtedly a horrible tragedy but the evidence will strongly support that Adnan Syed is not guilty.
The state's main evidence will strongly depend on the claims of Jay Wilds a criminal and he is known to change his story multiple times. According to Jay's story Adnan planned this murder but this cannot be used as the only evidence to convict Adnan. Jay is a unstable unreliable source and this case is in his hand and dependent on his changing story. The detectives interview Jay and he says that no one would

The biggest pieces of evidence of the state are they proven unreliable stories of Jay Wilds and this call. Nisha does not know Jay so Adnan must have called him while they were in the car according to Jay's story Adnan was in the car and not the library but there's one problem that Nisha repeatedly tells the police that she remembers a call talking to Jay and Adnan at the video store Jay worked at not in the car, she stresses multiple times that she cannot remember this call taking place. The other question is how did this call happen if Adnan was in the library how did this call happen. Adnan says he remembers her phone having a answering machine proving it could have simply been a but dial , but Nisha says she does not remember having one. If we think about this, who would know if there was an answering machine? Adnan who calls her frequently or Nisha because clearly she's not calling herself and Adnan is calling her so he would know if there was one or not. When was the last time you actually called yourself and heard your voicemail? Is it not more reasonable someone who calls you regularly would know more than

Sarah Koenig in Serial, and Rabia Chaudry in Undisclosed begins their investigations with preconceived reasons for Adnan Syed’s innocence. Chaudry is personally connected with Syed through her brother Saad Chaudry, Syed’s best friend, so Rabia Chaudry believes Syed’s awesome and cannot commit murder. Thus, as a lawyer, Chaudry has previously reviewed the state’s case thoroughly. On the other hand, Koenig begins her investigation with a different reason for doubting the state’s case against Syed. Koenig believes that Syed’s defense lawyer, Christina Gutierrez, might have messed-up; Koenig wrote an article in the Baltimore Sun about Syed’s defense lawyer when she was disbarred from law, for mishandling client’s money.…

This idea that Adnan killed her in 21 mins seems farfetched. By constructing this time frame the prosecution is implying that the murder was premeditated because it would take meticulous planning to succeed in executing a murder under such time…

There is no physical evidence that Adnan committed the murder, just assumptions and theories that led to his imprisonment. Jay, Adnan’s best friends boyfriend, tells the cops that Adnan had let him know that he was going to kill Hae. He also states that Adnan gives him his car and cellphone but who does this with someone you don't really know. There is no true evidence here. Jay even lets the cops know he helped bury Hae’s body.…

Jay told the police that Adnan told him the plan of how he is going to murder Hae. Jay also said that Adnan showed him the body of Hae in his trunk. In the podcast, Jay says, “Because it’s not something you forget – where you were when you saw a dead body in the trunk of a car.” (Episode 4, pg 65). This explains that Adnan is guilty since Jay witness the body of Hae after Adnan murdered her.…

It’s a possibility that Jay is lying because he never really did all of those things with Adnan. Every time he got interrogated, he could’ve been forgetting the lies he made up and therefore had to say something else. In conclusion, Adnan is innocent because Jay, the person Adnan was mainly convicted off of seems to be lying about…

Although the other side might argue that because Adnan Syed bought a phone a few days before the murder happened, that is not enough evidence to make him guilty, because there is also the state’s lack of evidence and the inconsistency in the testimony of the one witness. Due to the fact that the state has found slim evidence to prove that Adnan syed is guilty, they had no reason to charge him, making him innocent.…

Not only that but the only person who claims to have seen him in that time frame “called one of the prosecutors in… the case…and undermined her own statement” proving his actual location was unknown at the time. It is unusual that Adnan would not remember anything about this crucial day because he received a phone call from the police. He says he does “remember that phone call and [he does] remember being high at the time” but continues to deny remembering anything else because the day was “normal”, but, receiving a phone call from the police does not seem very normal and most people would remember the events leading up to it. Another reason why Adnan is legally at fault is because he…

That is a huge detail from this day because usually you would remember a day that a cop calls you. You would remember where you were, what you were doing, who you were with. In fact Koenig says “you were young, you were high, it is a scary call to get.” (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”). In case you did not know, Adnan smokes weed which some could believe why he does not in fact remember the call from the police.…

The second reason I think Adnan must be innocent is because there are too many inconsistencies that Jay provides during his testimony while being interviewed by the police. Jay provides many stories, which sometimes do not match up to Adnan’s story or to the stories he provides. There were many inconsistencies that did not make sense, of which I will share the 3 that I found most important, which you can find in episode 4 called “Inconsistencies". The…

Originally aired on the 20th of March 2014, Sarah Koenig produced the podcast Serial ‘The Alibi’ which demonstrates a wide variety of different techniques and conventions to persuade the listening audience of Adnan’s innocence. The way Koenig’s structures her argument, as shown in the transcript, shows to the audience the uncertainty of the prosecution. Did Adnan kill Hae? Is Adnan being framed by Jay? Many questions like this arise in Koenig’s proposal and how she approaches this case.…

Even with all of this in mind, the court sees him as the main suspect and is not dissuaded by his normal persona. They pin him as Hae Min Lee’s killer by using the jealous boyfriend stereotype. It is also bad for his case when there are phone records and accounts of him acting strange on the day of her murder. Jay seems to be the only one that has a story that is sound enough to have Adnan as the main suspect.…
