Jay Longer: Jay is a very hard-hearted man, who even though he is a law enforcer, he is into some pretty deep dept due to gambling. Jay’s roughness comes from the loss of his wife and son a few years back. He has sworn off God and everything else that comes with faith. Jay is a rugged and tough character in this book, but Patience definitely knows that he has a soft heart and a part of his past that she would like to understand.

He goes from being a rough, tough, hard-hearted type of man to a loving, caring gentleman again. He loses his faith and he regains it through the help of Patience and Wilson. He used to be a gambler, but that changes when he finds his love for Patience and Wilson growing. Jay begins to accept his natural feelings of his heart and stops fighting with God. He learns to let God into his life to help him and to help him gain enough courage to love another woman and child, like he used to love his firsts.
Every human feels fear fits Patience. She has the fear of being kidnapped for starters, to the fear of not living and dying in the mountains of Colorado and fearing that she is the only person who feels the connection between Jay and her. She also is fearful that if she does not find gold in this mine that she will let all of her friends down because she won’t be able to support them and give them a good life that they deserve. These are only physical fears though, she also has fears that her one and only dream is going to slip away. She is scared that her dream of becoming rich is just only a dream, no a reality. She is fearful that she will have to face the facts and return to Denver City, alone and without
