Jay Gatsby Struggles

Throughout the whole book Gatsby is facts with many different struggles. These include his high social standing, his moral dilemmas, his fatal flaw. All of these reason affect society in some way. Gatsby was a great man, this is why Jay Gatsby is a tragic hero in The Great Gatsby.

First, Gastby has a high social status. He has a private plane and a big house. When Nick meets Gatsby he asked him, “And don’t forget we’re going up in the hydroplane to-morrow morning, at nine o’clock.” (Fitzgerald). This is in the 1940s owning a plane mean that you are a rich and highly regarded person. Next, he knows the police commissioner. His first moral struggle is getting Daisy to know who he is again. He throw all of his parties just for Daisy to come and she never did. But when Nick moved right next to him to figured out that Nick is Daisy's cousin and eventually got Daisy to have tea. Next he is a bootlegger. Nobody really knows what Gatsby does but he is a bootlegger. “I found out what your ‘drug-stores’ were”( Fitzgerald). This is Tom talking to Gatsby about how he sells alcohol through drug stores. The next one is telling Tom that Daisy loves him not Tom. Gatsby talking to Tom saying “You don’t understand,” said Gatsby, with a touch of panic. “You’re not going to take care of her any more” (Fitzgerald). But one is not telling people that it was Daisy who killed Myrtle. This lead to many bad things. First, it makes Daisy want Tom instead of Gatsby. Daisy doesn't want to be with Gatsby because he knows what happened and if she is with Tom she can just run away from it. Next, it makes Gatsby practically go insane. “All night, if necessary. Anyhow, till they all go to bed”(Fitzgerald). He waits outside of her window all night for her to come out but she is just in their with Tom. Lastly, this leads to Gatsby death. Since he didn't tell people that it was Daisy driving, everybody thought it was him. “You don’t have to tell me what kind of car it was! I know what kind of car it was!”(Fitzgerald).This is what Wilson said to Tom after the accident. So than Wilson goes to Gatsby's house and shoot him in the chest.
Lastly, his flaw affects society. First Nick goes practically insane. After his Nick was never the same and needed to see a therapist. Next Mr. Wolfshiem couldn't go to his funeral. “Nobody’s in,” she said. “Mr. Wolfshiem's gone to Chicago”(Fitzgerald) This is nick talking to Wolfshiem’s assistant. He couldn't go because he didn't want anyone to find out that he worked with Gatsby with the bootlegging. Next right after he died Daisy moved. When Gatsby dies Daisy moved with Tom.
