Daisy and Gatsby were both in his car where Daisy was the one steering the wheel leading to Myrtle’s death. However, Gatsby would eventually say, “‘Yes but of course I’ll say I was,’” (143). Being able to take the blame for killing someone is a heroic trait. Gatsby protects his love of his life from encountering consequences and is willing to sacrifice his own for someone.
Finally, Gatsby is a romantic dreamer whose pursuit is heroic because he sacrifices so much just to be with Daisy again. Gatsby’s work and motivation was to just be with her. Gatsby, “‘had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths-so that he could “come over” some afternoon to a stranger’s garden,” (78). Another is that, “‘Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay,’” (78). Waiting and planning this for five years is a full commitment. Gatsby sacrificed so much just get back to Daisy.
In the other hand, critics say that he is not a romantic dreamer whose pursuit is heroic but instead a morally corrupt figure we should distance ourselves from. For one instance, Gatsby wants to be able to match her social class as being one of the rich so he commits illegal acts. Gatsby makes his money through bootlegging gang related
