Who is the real Jay Gatsby- relate the vision (fantasy) to Jimmy Gatz? In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the author implies that in the corrupt society, that is unaware of their priorities, Jay Gatsby is one of the few who represents a pure- hearted gentleman trying to pursue in his dreams and make the most of his life. The entire population of East and West Egg are seen drinking heavily and partying at houses where they don’t even know the owner which seems to be a normal part of their lives. Jay Gatsby signifies the reality of the way people need to act in order to achieve the American dream. Jay Gatsby is known for throwing numerous parties and having tons of people in attendance. Later revealed to being a light on Daisy’s dock which signifies the reward for Gatsby relating to the American dream. Gatsby “raised his hand and pointed across the bay”; at this time we are shown what Gatsby’s drive is in order to make his decisions (118). Daisy is his true love and as he points in her dock’s direction he is implying his determination to get what he wants, he narrows his vision on what really matters to him. Jay is basically blocking out all outside distractions, so that he can focus on nothing but obtaining Daisy’s love. This also will play a significant part in Gatsby’s everyday life. Because we are introduced to Gatsby’s persuasion in his decision making we are able to make a direct relation to Jay’s earlier years. In his late teens, early twenties, Gatsby was known by the name of Jimmy Gatz who was more towards the opposite end of the wealthy spectrum. He was accepted by a copper tycoon, Dan Cody, and was able to experience the lifestyle that accompanied a lot more money than he was used to. Gatsby with his new experience then thought of the man that the love of his life previously married, Tom Buchanan, who was a man of outstanding wealth. This was the turning point in which Gatsby realized he would use Daisy as his motivation to becoming rich in order to win over his love. Jay Gatsby’s determination signifies one of his other traits
