“Most of them can’t be seen with the naked eye” (Hannah) Thirteen Reasons Why a novel by Jay Asher deals with depression and suicide through a story with the main characters, Hannah Baker and Clay Jensen. Hannah has killed herself and has 13 tapes with names of people explaining why they were the reasons she killed herself. Among the 13 teens there is Clay Jensen. Clay has to listen to the tapes to hear what his scar did to Hanna. In the book Scars were mentioned. Scars can be a symbol of he the hurt that people cause and the depression the scars could be representing physically and mentally. Don’t ignore the scars that cause hurt, depression or any outside signs. Hannah had plucked the part of the eyebrow that had the scar and that was a reminder to Hannah. This relates to the theme because sometimes scars have a story behind them, but nobody would ever know the true meaning behind them. They could also be a symbol of depression. Lastly, Hannah is talking through the tapes as Clay listens she says “… And what about you-the rest of you-did you notice the scars you left behind?” (68) This quote is connected to the theme because it’s talking about the scars they all left on her, but can’t see and how much they all affected her and if they even noticed how much weight they put on Hannah.
