A Media Product that has had a strong impact on its audience is the film ‘Jaws’. This film uses the hypodermic needle technique as it emphasises a negative opinion on sharks and how they are dangerous man-killers which is what gave them such fearsome reputations. The film spawned an international panic about sharks and this created a mass audience effect as the attraction to go to destinations with beaches declined as people were afraid to go into the sea. Another effect the film had was an increase in shark fishing tournaments with dozens of tournaments taking place on the East Coast of the US. As a result the shark hunting trend dramatically reduced all shark species over the following decades.

Seeing all those uninformed vacationers bobbing in the ocean like so many fish food flakes is gripping stuff -- certainly to be avoided by children wrestling with water phobias. (Mignola,July 9, 2003). An example is from one of the beginning scenes where the boy is swimming in the sea and the shark is seen underwater. The passive consumption technique is used because the audience can predict what is going to happen to the child because of the anticipation and suspense leading up to the shark attack. The underwater shot (POV) from the shark’s perspective emphasises that the shark is luring closer to the child; whose legs are seen underwater. After the child has been attacked by the shark, the audience believe and accept that what they have just watched is true. This is because the brutal and harsh way the seemingly normal scenario is portrayed in the scene conveys a sense of realism. It is because of this that many families changed their holiday destinations because of being afraid of their children going into the sea and being attacked by a shark, therefore emphasising the impact the film had on it’s
