There are many themes throughout the story. One could be west versus east. Shūsaku try's to show the difference between western Christianity and the east. He really goes in depth about japan. He tells us how that Christianity could not grow roots in Japan because he compared it to a swamp. When the missionary's came to spread the word of god the people didn’t understand the meaning of Christianity like the missionary's did. Another theme could be Atheism. When Rodrigues confronts the difficulties of his life in Japan. He views the suffering all around him, he comes to questions the existence of the God he has always taken as a fact. He starts to doubt God, as he realizes that if there is no God, that him and all of the Christians around him have been worshiping a non-existent God. This story contains many more themes through out the novel. I believe that Endō was trying to tell the world how bad the Christians had it and why they wanted to o spread
