4.1 Introduction
In this chapter, all the results and analysis in this experiment that have been performed are discussed in detailed. The analysis included characterization and optimization. In addition, the graph and table were prepared to better present the results.
4.2 Extraction Of Jatropha Curcas By Using Soxhlet Extraction Method And Microwave Extraction Method
The extraction of Jatropha curcas can be done through many methods such as mechanical extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, aqueous enzymatic oil extraction and also soxhlet extraction (Felix & Clement, 2011). In this research, two different method was used to obtained a higher amount …show more content…
The yield of oil extraction was compared between both method which is microwave assisted extraction method and soxhlet extraction method. Two different solvent was used in soxhlet extraction method which is polar solvent and non-polar solvent. The oil yield from soxhlet extraction method for 8 hours by using Methanol is 50% while Hexane is 81.82%. The oil extracted from microwave assisted extraction method for 1 hour by using distilled water is 59%. The volume of distilled water used was up 350 mL in order to make sure the reaction was smoothly occur in the 500 mL round bottom …show more content…
350 mL of water was used to obtain 59% oil yield. Compared 81.82% oil yield was obtained with 350 mL hexane and 8 hours extraction time. Therefore, the microwave assisted extraction was considered as green technology and the effective way of producing bio-oil from Jatropha curcas. The soxhlet extraction take a long reaction time in order to obtained 50% and 81.82% of oil yield due to the conventional heating process that is much slower compared to the microwave heating process. In addition, the microwave energy work selectively with water surrounded the sample as well as it will reacted with polar molecule in the form of moisture inside cell. Due to microwave effect, the moisture inside the cell was heating up and cause in evaporation and generates tremendous pressure on the cell wall. The pressure inside the cell wall may cause the cell expansion. The expansion was allowed force and induced the breaking of the cell wall thus releasing oil to outside the
