Within the first 3 pages of the book, Charlie has courage to sneak out his window with Jasper. We find out that Jasper leads them to the woods where Laura’s dead body is. “This is the first time I’ve ever dared to sneak away from home. The thrill of this, coupled with the fact that Jasper Jones needs my help, already fills the moment with something portentous”(Silvey 2). This quote shows that Charlie has been a somewhat well behaved kid, as he’s never snuck away from home before. It’s very courageous for Charlie, a 13 year old boy to head out with Jasper, someone he doesn’t know on a personal level. It takes courage for Charlie to take the risk and leave his home without informing his parents. Jasper and Charlie show courage when they go to Mad Jack’s and confront him. “We’re going to Mad Jack Lionel’s. We’re really doing it. We”re about to trespass on the property of a killer”(234). With the knowledge Jasper and Charlie have of Mad Jack, it’s clear to see why they’d be frightened. It takes courage for Jasper and Charlie to confront a man who has killed before, and who they think has killed Laura. To muster up the courage and to be so confident with the situation. We later discover though, that Mad Jack is Jasper’s grandfather. I see this as a reward for the courageous actions shown by Jasper. It made the fright and worry all worth it, and his courage rewarded
