Throughout this episode I will be elaborating upon the techniques and expertise the great, Craig Silvey used throughout the book, Jasper Jones to portray the clear idea that people are quick to judge based on appearance and rumours. This was made possible through the use of the character Jasper Jones, who is constructed as an emotion and highly complex character who is directly affected by this horrible trait of human nature. Silvey, throughout the book and through a substantial yet clever use of textual and language features was able to portray this message in such a prolific way like he did. Don’t you think that if you had never peeled an orange you would just come to the conclusion that it is simply a useless orange ball. Corrigan, as the book describes was as a whole vastly prejudice towards people who didn’t abide nor fit by the towns idea and values. Which is another factor that diminishes the public’s view on jasper due to the fact that he was half indigenous. although at during this time period although the white policy was abolished, people were still in a predisposition against indigenous people.
At the start of the novel Silvey uses the character Charlie Bucktin to convey to us the countless rumours surrounding Jasper, this helps portray the idea that Jasper is an outcast in comparison to the community of Corrigan. These rumours and the fact that he is a half – cast completely diminishes the true personality of Jasper. This leads people to misjudge Jasper solely based upon the rumours and Jasper’s appearance. This can be seen through the following quote “he’s a Thief a Liar, a Thug a Truant. He’s lazy and unreliable.” “he’s feral and an orphan or as good as” (Chapter 1, Charlie Bucktin) This quote was so effective due to the heavy use of word choice and language features. This can be seen through the quote “You need to understand that truth is stranger than fiction. Listen: people are willing to swallow any old tripe as long as you say it without flinching. They want to be told stuff. And they don't want to doubt you either. It's too hard.” (Chapter 2, Jasper Jones,) This quote has been used by Silvey to symbolise that the town folk base their judgement of a person solely off fallacies. The word ‘swallow’ in this quote has the connotations to something naturel. Silvey has done this to show that for the towns peoples believing lies and judging people based off appearance is naturel to them and that it has become second nature for the town folk. Craig has used a contrast in this quote where the sentence starts quite a demanding word that of ‘listen’ and finishes that sentence with the word flinching which generally if associated with weak and gutless things such as nerves and anxieties. Craig has indirectly linked the word ‘swallow’ to the towns values due to the fact that the word has a natural connotation which links to the fact that for the town lies are a natural process. Nevertheless, Silvey throughout the novel has left room for interpretation to make the novel feel more relatable and Silvey has done this through the usage
