The primroses has reached the end, and the ground soon became open and sloped downward. There was a fence separating this area and the area where many rabbit holes were. On the side of the fence where the rabbit holes were surrounded with green grass and not too far away was a brook. As the sun was setting in May, the rabbits were nibbling at the grass and looking for dandelions At the top of the bank, two rabbits came out of the hole. First, the larger of the two, Hazel, came out and sat down in the sunlight. Then, the other followed. The smaller one, Fiver, was inexperienced with the outdoors and hesitated when anything approached him. His name was Fiver because he was the fifth in the litter. Since the chief does not believe them, they father a group of rabbits to go back later and talk to the Chief. But when this happens, their friend, Bidwig, is accused of trying to overthrow Threarah, so Captain Holly arrests him. Bidwig then attacks Holl and the rabbits leave. That night they travel slowly and quietly throughout the woods, but they soon get tired and rest. They have trouble resting because they are all too nervous about the situation, so Hazel asks if Dandelion could tell them a relaxing story. Dandelion tells an old folk story about the legendary rabbit hero, El-ahrairah. The rabbits sit there while he tells the story. But after the story is finished, the rabbits were not relaxed. This is because a lendri approached the rabbits. As they are running away in fear, they come to a river. Obviously the first idea that came to Fiver was that they needed to cross, but he didn’t know how they would. They were all hesitant about going over the river, but life on the other side seemed much better. The rabbits are trying to figure out a way to get across the river, but they need to think faster.
