Shinder didn’t use extraordinarily tricky underlined meanings in this piece of artwork. As I was reading through this poem I got the gist of what it was talking about. He is talking about how he can’t really confide in his friends. When the poem reads, “I keep them away from my miseries because to say I am miserable is to say I am like them” it illustrates that all his friends are miserable. “Sometimes I dream they have broken up with their lovers and are carrying food to my house” shows us that he wishes that his friends and him would do more things together. He thinks that relationships are taking up too much of their time and they aren’t focusing on anything else. He feels lonely because all his friends are focusing on other things rather than him. When Shinder talks about bringing food to his house he doesn’t mean that literally. He means that he wishes they would give him the time of day and cater to him more often. Shinder sets a mood during this poem. He is trying to portray the mood of a sad, lonely yet popular kid. “I cannot be trusted to tell them how I am. Or if I am falling to earth weighing less than a dozen roses” Shinder says in his poem. He feels as if he is on his own and that his friends are truly not there to support him in time of need. If he were to tell them he was feeling down they wouldn’t try to boost him back up. How I Am is a poem that most people could relate to.
