Jason Rudy Pedagogy

Decent Essays
I love Professor Jason Rudy's pedagogy. He is able to incorporate a diverse range of subjects, e.g, music, art, literature, the socio-political landscape as well as show the multitude of divergent voices in the Victorian period. The inclusion of visual art and music is a welcome anomaly to his style as someone who has not been exposed to these aesthetics as much as the literary. The synthesis of his vast knowledge is easily transferred to his students. Additionally, he seems to really want to improve his students' abilities, which is shown in his critique of my essays as well as the individual attention he gives to each and every student. Moreover, Jason Rudy is a compassionate humanitarian and a welcome addition to the University of Maryland

The desks in the classrooms were set up for collaborative learning which seemed to really work for her students. Mrs. Gaither also did great job in teaching with all the different learning styles so that she could reach each student’s preference. After each assignment, Mrs. Gaither went around to each individual student and went over their answers with the student. Based on what answers they got wrong is where she would focus more attention. I found this style of teacher very helpful to each student because it wasn’t just as a whole.…

Willow Charter Academy (WCA) is a charter school located in Lafayette, Louisiana and managed by National Heritage Academies (NHA). A close examination of WCA’s Faculty and Staff Handbook, Student and Parent Handbook and NHA’s Employee Handbook show correlation to the federal law and describes some policies and procedures related to students and staff. While the Employee Handbook references many relevant federal laws while describing their procedure, it rarely mentions anything state-specific as NHA operates nation-wide. A comparison between the handbooks and Lafayette Parish School System’s (LPSS) policies and procedures listed online shows the difference between charter and public schools in relation to how their policies are created.…

John Dewey and Maria Montessori both agreed on the principles of effective education. That is: learning is not from receiving information, children themselves form images by working with materials, learning is like going through life—knowledge earned from working with materials is a physical and psychological change, and learning is through interactions with environment. Even though Montessori was focusing on individual’s skills and development, Dewey was concentrated on group approaches. Both human experiments on education were able to prove that students learn better working with materials on hands, rather than teachers lecturing their knowledge on students.…

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

Since Tim Apodaca’s arrival at Highland Park as a teacher (he's also a graduate of HP) I've seen him strive every day to improve his pedagogy, curriculum, and techniques- almost to a fault. His natural, easy rapport with students combined with his unrivaled knowledge of his subject area (He was the lead mechanic for this school district for ten years, maintain 501’s fleet of vehicles!)-make him a standout in the classroom as an educator. What makes him distinguished, however, is his constant quest to improve himself as a professional. Not a day goes by that Tim doesn't stop by my room (To be fair, he is next door to me!)…

Midterm Exam – The Child and the Curriculum John Dewey’s The Child and the Curriculum, written over a century ago, poses a question that can still prove relevant to teachers in this day and age. His primary question that he attempts to tackle in his paper, is simple: should education be tailored to a child’s specific needs, or to a set curriculum? Throughout the paper, he argues that the tug of war between child and curriculum is ultimately futile; choosing one over the other will still prove detrimental. Ultimately, Dewey says “all depends upon the activity which the mind itself undergoes in responding to what is presented from without” (Dewey, 1906, p.39). In other words, Dewey believes that experience is the key to learning, and the ideal curriculum should focus on…
