After conducting an in-depth interview with successful college graduate, Tim Love, I have formed multiple connections from his college experience to ideas presented in past readings, lectures and discussions. Before explaining my findings, I think it is important to note that Tim is a thirty-three year-old married father of one daughter (soon-to-be two daughters) who works as a dean for Loyola University where he attended college and received a major in Italian. The first insight I formed was that Tim’s idea of success is fairly equivalent to that of a successful person as defined by this course’s instructors. Tim’s idea of success is being able to work hard at something, such as solving a problem, while being able to produce an unintentional…

Kopelman, Prottas, and Davis (2008) note employees under theory X management are considered “lazy, are incapable of self-direction and autonomous work behavior, and have little to offer in terms of organizational problem solving” (p. 255). Prompting managers to micro-manage and make all decisions independently, no matter how it may affect the staff. This same behavior is seen in this case study. Although CNO Jones was fully aware of the hospitals declining financial status she did not take the time to inform her lower level staff.…

To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

James MacGregor Burns’ Leadership also offers critical insight into the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of moral leadership. According to Burns, “transformational leadership demands commitment, persistence, courage, perhaps selflessness and self-abnegation. Pragmatic, transactional leadership requires a shrewd eye for opportunity, a good hand at bargaining, persuading, reciprocating.” Simply put, transformational leaders seek to mobilize their followers to through act of self-sacrificing service for the public good.
