We’re taught to believe what is morally wrong and right to lead our lives. And in doing so, it should allow us to live life based on our morals free from the constrictions of ethical laws brutally enforced upon us. Dillard’s moral standards as an almost qualified doctor to save the drunk man’s life were morally right.…

They are going out to get something to eat during their lunch break at school because their school allows off campus lunches. When the teenager emerges from the wreck, the main character is relieved, but also feels terrible and apologizes with “so, so sorry,” hoping that he won’t comment on his or her mental wellbeing and state of inebriation. Fear is something that drives this world. It is a natural emotion that causes damage to the body and mind, affecting our decisions, communication, and productivity. Whether we want to accept it or not, fear has a purpose which is to help us during times of struggle. We take comfort in our fears and let it soothe us. Eula Biss in her essay, “On Immunity: An Inoculation” brings a great point on how people seem to base their paranoia off of other people’s fears, and lack of knowledge.…

On September 9th, 2016 I was a passenger in rear-end car accident. At the young age of seventeen, I was ignorant, rebellious and negligent. At this time, I honestly believed that I knew it all and was always in the right; I would ignore anyone trying to guide me towards the right path or give me advice. As in the short story “Rain of Fire” by Evan Thomas, I would have never expected that a regular day could end up in such catastrophe. I learned not to trust those whom I have not gotten to know well enough.…

In John Berger’s book Understanding a Photograph, he argues that there is a distinct discontinuity between an individual viewing a photo, and the actual photo. A picture solely preserves a single moment in time, and while they often act to tell a story, the medium cannot be fully interpreted without knowing the story that surrounds it. Although there is a definite connection between a photograph and the narrative that corresponds with it, the photo is only a visual aid for the story; it does not tell us everything like the written piece does. I agree with Berger’s argument that photographs can shape the written story that is told about a single character through invoking various responses, emotions, feelings, and interpretations between the…
