“Never a day goes by for all these many years when I haven’t thought about it,” Stratton, one of nine still-living Pearl Harbor survivors remembers. “I don’t talk about it too much, but when December rolls around, I do. It’s important the American people don’t forget.”(“Dodd”). On December 7, 1941, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the US Naval Base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. It caused many deaths and ships to be destroyed. A day after the attack, U.S. declared war on Japan which led them into WWII. How did Japanese Imperialism lead to the attack? How is the relationship between Japan and America in the 1800s? What really happened on the day of actual bombing? Before the attack, “At the U.S. naval base, sailors were enjoying a quiet Sunday morning.”(Japan). Although the United States knew an attack was likely imminent by breaking the diplomatic code, but no extreme precautions had been taken to protect the base. This can be described as the calm before the storm. In the morning of December 7, 1941, about 6 am, Japanese dropped anchor 200 miles away of Pearl Harbor. “Likely hour and fifteen minutes after, 360 planes coming toward Pearl Harbor. There were 96 all kind of ships, including U.S. battleships. The Battleship Row, which where all the battleships placed in, were the primary target to the Japanese.” (“Japan”). Seven fifty five, the first bomb dropped, “all the smoke and just then great spouts of water began rising out of the ocean. . . . The great spouts rose all about some of our battle ships.”(2016). After a moments of shock, soldiers soon return with anti-aircraft gun on shore. Even though the navy had a quick reaction but still many planes had been destroyed by that time. At 8:50, the second bomb dropped, they fought but unprepared. The attack ended about 10 am. “The Japanese damaged 18 ships. At Wheeler Air Field, 161 U.S. planes were destroyed and another 102 were significantly damaged. More than 3500 Americans were killed or wounded.”(“Japan”). Japanese also lose, but light. No one expect this to happened, and the action angered the Americans, they were going to fight
