Abstract
Communication is very diverse throughout different cultures. Geert Hofstede demonstrates this through his cultural dimensions. They are Power Distance, Individualism/Collectivism, Masculinity/Femininity, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long-term/Short-term orientation, and Indulgence/Restraint. Power Distance is the expecting and acceptance that power will be equally or unequally shared. Individualism/Collectivism the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members. Masculinity/femininity is a society driven by competition or values. Uncertainty Avoidance is the way a society deal with the fact that the future is unknown. Long-term/Short-term orientation is how a culture values patience in arriving at rewards in the future or immediately in the here and now. Indulgence/Restraint is the extent to which people try to control their desires and impulses. The United States and Japan are very similar and very different when comparing and contrasting their cultures to these dimensions. This deals with how a culture values patience in arriving at rewards in the future or immediately in the here and now(Sprague, Stuart, Bodary, 2014). A short-term culture like the United States value rewards in the here and now, emphasize quick results, and getting to the bottom line efficiently. A short-term culture also seperates leisure time from working time (Sprague, Stuart, Bodary, 2014).
