Janusz Korczak was born Henryk Goldszmit in 1878 in Warsaw, Poland. He was born to Jozef and Cecylia Goldszmit. His dad was a lawyer and his mother was the daughter of an important businessman. He was a quiet kid. He would play with blocks and read books for hours. But in 1889 his father had a mental breakdown and later died in 1896. When Germany declared war on Poland, the city was destroyed. When the Nazi’s came for them he taught his children to keep their heads up as they marched to the train station. The Nazi’s recognized Janusz and offered to let him go free but he didn’t want to leave his children. He just helped them get on the train to Treblinka. He died in Treblinka with his children.
I learned that Janusz was a hero to the children he cared for in the orphan home. I felt that he had a big heart and really wanted to protect his children. Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier primarily known for voluntarily entering the German concentration camp in Auschwitz as a spy during the Second World War, was the personification of heroism. He is unquestionably one of the most outstanding historical figures, whose courageous feats taught the world a great deal about what it truly means to “make a difference”. Like most of his fellow countrymen, he fought bravely all throughout the war, doing everything that was in his power to bring an end to the terrible atrocities of the war. Witold Pilecki proved to be hero as early as 1919.…

As the Seattle Times reported in December of 2010, Conrad Zdzierk, a white polish man, used “hyper realistic” mask to disguise himself as a black man as he robbed several banks in Ohio. While the mask is realistic looking, the fact that he used this mask as a way to evade the police and cause another man to be arrested in his place is a horrible reality. I was unable to find a picture of the wrongly accused man to compare to the mask, but the fact that a mask caused an innocent man to be arrested is baffling. Regardless of how closely mask’s appearance resembled the man’s, that should not have led to the man’s arrest. Just because you look similar to someone who committed a crime does not mean you can be arrested just for how you look.…
