Janusz Korczak was born Henryk Goldszmit in 1878 in Warsaw, Poland. He was born to Jozef and Cecylia Goldszmit. His dad was a lawyer and his mother was the daughter of an important businessman. He was a quiet kid. He would play with blocks and read books for hours. But in 1889 his father had a mental breakdown and later died in 1896. After his father passed away the family had to sell all their expensive things.
He wrote a play about a madman and his family and submitted in to a contest. He used the pen name Janusz Korczak because maybe he was afraid of the judges knowing he was Jewish. He won the golden leualer for his play.

He also wrote children’s books; and advice books for adults teaching them to always love their children and respect their beliefs.
When Germany declared war on Poland, the city was destroyed. When the Nazi’s came for them he taught his children to keep their heads up as they marched to the train station. The Nazi’s recognized Janusz and offered to let him go free but he didn’t want to leave his children. He just helped them get on the train to Treblinka. He died in Treblinka with his children.
I learned that Janusz was a hero to the children he cared for in the orphan home. I felt that he had a big heart and really wanted to protect his children. The last words in his diary inspired me to never wish ill on anyone. It also taught me to always be supportive of my younger sisters and their imaginations and
