American Dreams Offered to Janie
The American Dream can be defined as many different things. The definition of the American Dream depends on who you ask; it differs from person to person. For example, if you ask a farmer what their American Dream is they may say it is caring for their crops and livestock and living a stable life. However, if you ask a corporate executive what their American Dream is they may say it is rising to the top of the corporate ladder and making a lot of money. The point? The concept of the “American Dream” is entirely subjective, it depends on who you are and what you want in life.
Alternatively, even though every person has their own specific American Dream, there is a generic ideal of the dream that applies to the whole country. This ideal is what first comes to mind when one hears the term, the American Dream. Historian James Truslow Adams describes it best, “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” This is the overall idea of the American Dream. He is an old wealthy farmer with sixty acres of land that he prospers off of. He does not keep himself clean, refusing to wash his feet before coming to bed or trimming his toe nails. He is also over forty-five years older than Janie. Logan works his land hard. His dream is to have someone with him to help him farm his lands. Farming is hard work which Janie is not used to. She does not understand the love that Logan puts into chopping wood or plowing the fields. Logan’s type of dream is safe, dependable and something tangible.
